Save File Crashes After Load

I've made a grave mistake by raising the graphics. Now a certain save file would just crash after the loading is complete. It seems to be the only save file that actually has problems. I've tried lowering the settings and none seems to be working right now. Unfortunately, it seems like I have broken the save in a seemingly unrecoverable state and I have no idea how to get it back. I have Seasons, Late Night, and Generations installed, by the way. Is there any way to revert the save to an earlier state? At least this taught me a lesson to backup my saves regularly.

  • @Wristrake  You could try trashing options.ini, in Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3, and letting the game generate a new one.  This would reset all your in-game options to their defaults.  If you try this, don't change any graphics settings (the others are fine) except for the resolution and fullscreen/windowed mode if you want.

If that doesn't help, you can try loading the automatic backup the game keeps of each save.  Inside the Saves folder, you'll see a folder for each save plus another with a .backup extension.  So if this save is called SunsetValley, you'll see a SunsetValley.sims3 folder and a SunsetValley.sims3.backup folder.  Change the name of the backup and remove the extension (e.g. SunsetValley1.sims3), and it'll be available to load from the Main Menu.

In the future, it's always best to change graphics settings at the Main Menu and then quit to desktop before loading a save.  Doing otherwise can cause serious graphics glitches, although it doesn't usually permanently bork a save.  Backups saves are also a great idea regardless.
