I moved the folder to my desktop, but when I opened the launcher to start the game, its showing it as a new game and my previous households are gone.
@Vaaannnee Right, your save data is stored in the folder you moved, and the game can't read it anymore. The point was to test in a new save with none of the other content from your previous data in case something within the old folder was a problem.
If you can save your progress in the new save, you can copy over one of your old saves and test that too. But please don't move over any other data until you've tested the old save by itself. Since you're copying and pasting rather than dragging and dropping, you won't need to worry about missing mods or custom content—the original save will be intact in the old Sims 3 folder while you experiment on a copy.
If you get a crash when trying to save progress in the new save, please try disabling iCloud's syncing of the Documents folder.
