Sims 3 Errors, Glitches, Bugs, & Problems Without Working Solutions
Before I begin describing my problems within The Sims 3, I would first like to bring up the seemingly-nonexistent "Customer Support" that I expected from EA. I initially planned on emailing some sort of customer support for The Sims 3 in order to obtain help directly from the makers of the game, but it appears that there is no easy way to do this. I'm not even sure that there is a method of obtaining said responses from EA. I truthfully wanted to avoid posting a public question such as this altogether in order to limit the amount of unhelpful responses I might receive, but alas, I have become desperate to fix my game and resorted to this public discussion. I have repeatedly googled ways to directly contact EA, but all I could find was a phone number which I was rather wary of. My question has remained unanswered. Is there a way that I could contact customer support directly without having to go through a forum or discussion thread? I would like to know this for future reference if the need to contact them arises.
Problems Within My Game
Error Code 12: This error code seems to be quite common among simmers from all over the world. For the lucky few who have not experienced this error within their game, I shall describe it and the circumstances it occurs under to the best of my ability. When attempting to save your game, a blue box will pop up reading: "An unexpected error has occurred while saving: Error Code 12. Please consult the readme for details." Usually, this only occurs when one has played for a great deal of time without saving. A few of us receive this error after only playing for about a minute. Of course, my first reaction was to attempt to save my game again, but to no avail. This error continues to pop up nearly every time I try to save my game, even when I have only played for a few seconds. Selecting "Save As" does not allow me to save, though going to "Edit Town" and saving may help once in a great while. I may get lucky occasionally and receive the opportunity to save about three times for one game before receiving this error, but this does not happen often. It isn't a corrupt save that is causing this; Any time I start a new game, there is a high probability that this error will occur within only a few minutes. I literally have to save after my sim accomplishes the simplest of tasks such as "becoming thin" after sitting in the sauna from "Sunlit Tides", or simply when they come home from work, with or without a promotion. My gameplay now consists solely of creating sims, building houses, and losing progress. I have done a significant amount of research on this error and have tried nearly everything in order to make my game function properly once again, but none of my attempts have been successful. I have tried even simple things such as giving my saves a break from the "Saves" folders. A great deal of simmers seem to think that the Sims expansion causing this problem is "The Sims 3: World Adventures" but I know that this isn't the case for my game. The only time that I do not receive Error Code 12 is when my sim is off adventuring in China or Egypt, which is one of the primary functions of this expansion. I really do not know which expansion pack introduced this error, but I do know that I first noticed it when I had only "The Sims 3: Ambitions" and "The Sims 3" base game installed. Perhaps it has always been in the game and was not seen until only recently. My computer meets all of the requirements for "The Sims 3", and was actually built specifically for playing said game. I have every expansion pack and stuff pack in this series as well as quite a bit of store content. I currently have a few of Twallan's mods including "Error Trap" and "Master Controller", which I used temporarily in an attempt to fix my malfunctioning game. Error Code 12 appears regardless of any CC or mods installed on my computer. I do not use CC, though. I clean out my "DCBackup" folder regularly, leaving only the "ccmerged.package" file as suggested by other simmers. I also keep any saved sims or saves that I am not currently using in separate folders outside of "The Sims 3" folder, and I delete all of my saves with ".bad" on the end as soon as they appear. I can not tell you how many times I have done a factory reset or have given myself a fresh start on the game. It is getting quite frustrating, especially with the upcoming arrival of the newest expansion pack, "The Sims 3: Island Paradise" which I now regret pre-ordering as I will not be able to play it. I have seen where others have suggested allowing "The Sims 3" to have access to additional RAM in order for the game to save properly and rid your computer of the dreaded Error Code 12, but I do not possess enough RAM in order to allow it this access. If it is a RAM issue, then why is this not one of the requirements listed on the Sims 3 game package? Isn't it a bit misleading to not list the full requirements for your game to function properly on the outside of "The Sims 3" box? If this is the case and it were listed under the requirements for "The Sims 3", I would've known to install a later version of "Windows" than the one I currently possess in order to be able to use additional RAM for my game, thus allowing me to avoid this ongoing problem. I would like to know what I can do in order to make my game playable and Error Code 12-free once again, and, if it is indeed a RAM problem, I would like to request that EA list this under the requirements for the game in order to prevent future simmers from experiencing similar issues.
Crashing to Desktop: Ever since I first installed "The Sims 3", I have experienced the frequent crashing of my game to the desktop. This occurs with or without cheats, CC, or mods (yes, I have experimented with these). Usually, the game's background music will skip, or the section of the song currently playing when it begins to crash will continually repeat itself, which is quickly followed by the disappearance of the mouse. The screen will then turn black, and the music will continue to play. The mouse soon returns, and I am forced to wait an agonizing fifteen minutes before my screen returns to my desktop, if it returns to my desktop. Further activity on the computer following the crashing of my game is slowed significantly. There is no warning before my game begins to crash, the only pattern I have noticed being that it often occurs in CAS or when two or more processes within my game are occurring simultaneously. For example, if I were to left-click the portrait of a sim so as to focus the camera on them just as another member of the household was calling a sim to invite them out to eat, my game would crash, as two different events are occurring at the exact same time. This happens quite often, for I enjoy controlling households containing more than one sim. It is rather tedious having to repeatedly reload "the Sims 3", only to have it crash once again. I know that other simmers are experiencing similar issues, and there does not appear to be a working solution to this problem. As I said earlier, I do not use CC and I have only recently begun using Twallan's mods in an attempt to fix these problems, but I understand that he is a highly-respected modder within the sim community. I keep my game up-to-date when it comes to both my mods and my patches, and I keep any saves, as well as any saved sims I may have, in separate folders when they are not in use. I clean out my "DCBackup" folder every time I leave the game, the only file left behind being the "ccmerged.package" file. I fail to understand why my game does not function properly, as my computer meets all of the requirements. I would appreciate any responses that may shed a bit of light on this subject, as it is one of the more troublesome problems within my game.
Clothing Glitches: Before I begin to talk about two glitches that I experience on a regular basis within the game, I will go ahead and tell you: I have absolutely no CC installed, therefore it can not be what is causing these glitches. All of the content installed in my game at this point in time is store content crafted by EA, save for a select few of Twallan's mods, which I only installed in an attempt to help my game properly function once again. I am only saying this because, regardless of the amount of research I did on this particular subject, all I could find was a great deal of people troubled by mislabeled CC appearing on toddlers, babies, and children, causing deformities among their sim population. My trouble with clothing in "The Sims 3 " is far different from this. My main problem with clothing is this: It tends to appear on my sims with the same texture as their skin, giving them an inappropriate, nearly-nude appearance. It will still hold the shape of the original clothing article, but will be the same color as their skin and will tightly fit to their bodies. At first, it was merely disturbing, but now it is becoming a nuisance. Due to Error Code 12 and the immense amount of crashing my game undergoes, the only pleasure I can derive from "The Sims 3" franchise is merely that which is produced from creating unique sims with clothing fitted to their personalities and tastes. Since the clothing looks more like a mesh with the texture of skin, I can no longer find this enjoyable. I usually only have this happen once a sim gets out of their bathtub, but there is one shirt in particular from the store that has this appearance from the start. This shirt is for young adult males. I do not know what the exact name of this shirt is, and I do not feel like waiting forty-five minutes to load up my game and find out at the moment, but if I must list it for future reference than I suppose I shall be willing to do so when the time comes. The second clothing glitch I wish to discuss has to do with the rather strange choices of clothing that appear as career outfits for my sims. My sims will wear anything but a real career outfit to work. I've seen them go to work barefoot, in pajamas, in mini-skirts, in the troublesome skin-textured clothing I mentioned earlier, and even in genie outfits from "The Sims 3: Ambitions". I have since learned that one of Twallan's mods can be used to fix this career outfit glitch, which simmers believe was introduced in one of the later patches, but I still felt the need to mention it as one of the many things in this game that requires attention. A lot of simmers are against mods and only introduce EA content in to their game, and I know that a great deal of these people have legacies or 100-baby-challenges which require the game to be somewhat realistic. Also, it really isn't the fans' place to fix glitches within this game. I honestly believe it should be up to the creators to solve any problems brought on by their merchandise.
Slow Loading: This isn't necessarily a glitch or bug within "The Sims 3", but I thought it should be mentioned that the game takes nearly an hour to load up, and, what with the obsessive crashing, this discourages simmers from continuing to play their games.
Irremovable Fairy Wings & Alien Eyes on Non-Fairies & Aliens in CAS: I first noticed this only a few days ago, when a fairy I had previously saved to the bin appeared as the starting sim in CAS. I had saved another sim that I wished to play with at that time, so I opened up the bin and clicked on said sim. The sim appeared as they should have, but the wings of the fairy remained. Even though the sim's sub-type was "human", they still had irremovable and unselectable fairy wings. I was unable to rid my poor sim of this whimsical "accessory", which resulted in my exiting CAS and having to wait about fifteen minutes for it to load up once again. This time, the starting sim was an alien. I once again selected the sim I wanted to edit from the bin, and, like before, the supernatural characteristics of the previous sim were carried over to the new sim. The new sim was still a human yet possessed the black eyes and unusual vocals of an alien. I had to exit CAS and reenter, and discovered that, thankfully, the starting sim was human this time. This has happened multiple times since then, and it costs me a great deal of time. Is there any way I can fix this?
Freezing/Lagging: I believe that all of "The Sims 3" games ever released have this problem. The screen will freeze for a period of time, the only thing continuing being the rotation of the plumbob above the selected sim's head, as well as any music playing from a nearby stereo. Sometimes, the hours on your sim's clock will continue to progress as well. This can be quite annoying, and there appears to be no real pattern pertaining to what causes this to occur.
Lack of Alien Eyes Outside of the Bin: Any aliens that I create from a previously-existing alien saved to the bin or downloaded from the exchange on "The Sims 3" website lose their alien characteristics as soon as I click the check-mark in the bin and enter CAS. When I first select an alien from the bin, it possess its dark black eyes and unusual vocals, but all of this is lost as soon I press the check-mark and begin editing. I do not have the ability to control pure aliens without using a mod or moving in a pre-existing alien already out in my game.
Random Widening of Sim Portraits: This isn't much of an issue, but I did feel the need to mention it as it usually corresponds with unusual activity within my game such as crashing, invisible sims, or Error Code 12. The portrait of any selected sim may widen, thus giving my characters' pudgy faces. I've only experienced this in "Sunlit Tides" and "Monte Vista", and I've never heard any simmers complain of this issue. It usually only does this when my sim has disappeared for no apparent reason, but it has done this at other times, just not as frequently. It mainly occurs in "Monte Vista", as this store world gives my game a lot of trouble with its many glitches and errors. It worries me because it corresponds with game failure, but other than that it doesn't appear to negatively impact my game, just my graphics.
Constant Moodlets - This is one of the less-frequently occurring glitches within my game, but it still negatively affects my gameplay. I honestly haven't done any research on this, as it has only happened once or twice. Sometimes, a negative moodlet such as "Very Hungry" will appear and remain in my moodlet panel, even after my sim has eaten or fulfilled the need the negative moodlet is addressing. It will bring down their mood significantly the entire time I am playing my game, and this can cause a decrease in my sims' school or work performances.
Invisible Sims - I saw my first invisible sim when I purchased "Monte Vista" from "The Sims 3" online store. "Monte Vista" introduced a great deal of glitches in to my game, much to my dismay. A sim would randomly disappear, and I would be unable to click on said sim. Other sims could not interact with the invisible one. I could still perform actions as the invisible sim, but they would be terribly glitchy and eerie in appearance. If an invisible sim were to, say, take out the trash, the trash bag would slither across the floor and go in to the garbage can seemingly of its own accord. The plumbob and portrait of the invisible sim always remains, but the portrait widens. I have seen this happen to stray animals in my neighborhood as well as active sims. I have had a sim disappear in both "Sunlit Tides" and "Monte Vista". Resetting the sim can sometimes help, as well as changing clothes or taking a shower, but not always. I did a bit of research on this, and it seems that no two invisible sim accounts are alike, and there is no recognizable pattern.
Monte Vista Glitches - "Monte Vista", one of the later-introduced neighborhoods in "The Sims 3" online store, introduced a great deal of glitches in to my game. I can not play a game for very long in this neighborhood, and it seems that this was what started the obsessiveness of Error Code 12. Perhaps the timing was merely coincidental, but I thought I should mention this observation and see if anyone else has had similar problems with this neighborhood.
Thank you for reading my different accounts of glitches within "The Sims 3". I would like to hear similar stories and see if anyone has any fixes for these errors. It would also be nice to hear the opinion of someone associated with EA, but there is a high probability that this post may be ignored. I apologize for not creating a separate question for each topic, but I thought that, since each of these are problems within the game, they could be grouped together in order to conserve space and time. I have previously posted a question about Error Code 12, but I did not receive a satisfactory answer and solution so I decided to add a bit more information on the topic. Once again, thank you for your time.
