Sims 3 keeps crashing

Hello, I've just recently started playing the sims 3 again on my Macbook air. I have the MacBook Air M2 2022 16GB memory, and have 143GB left in storage. I also have the Generations expantion pack, and High end loft stuff.

Sometimes it crashes on the loading screen, and other times it crashes after like half an hour or an hour into playing. I would attach the crash report, but it dosent seem to work.

At first I played with a sim in the town Sunset Valley without any mods, and it worked fine until the first crash. Then I tried again and it just kept happening. After that, I watched some videos on how to stop this, and I downloaded some NRAAS mods and it seemed to work fine for a little while, until it started crashing again. I’m playing the 64-bit version if that makes any difference.

Please also let me know which NRaas mods you've added.  I'm not telling you to remove them, in fact I suggest using some of them in a lot of cases, but it would be helpful to know which ones are present.

Thank you for answering, I have ErrorTrap, MasterController, MasterControllerCheats, MasterControllerIntegration, Overwatch, Saver, Storyprogression and Traffic. Ive changed settings on all of them so the game so the game wouldn't be as packed.

I haven't tried to play it offline yet, but I'll update you if it works or not! :)

  • Hi, this version is not stable and no one here can help you. EA just left it as it is with no patch, fixes, etc.
It is not playable on Apple Silicon.

Oh, so EA just sucks more than it already does. thank you for telling me!

  • hellokitty11583 TeddyRoses  It is not accurate to say that this version of Sims 3 is completely unstable.  It certainly has its issues, but the issues are mostly about gameplay and visuals, not crashes.  It is absolutely possible to get the game running reasonably well and to avoid the few known triggers for crashing, for example the rock wall from the Store is always a problem.

This isn't just speculation or third-hand info; I myself use a Mac as my everyday computer and frequently test Sims 3 on it.  I do play in Windows when I want to play my own game, but that's because of certain features that don't work in macOS and because the game stutters a lot more, not because it crashes.

puzzlezaddict Oh okayokay :) i was just going to update you and say that it isnt working and now ive gotten a new crash that says “Your sims 3 base is incompatible with the current sims 3 expansion pack” so ive kinda just left it there. Thanks for trying to help though!

  • hellokitty11583  That particular error typically comes from an old (pre-64-bit) copy of Version.tag, inside Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3.  Delete this file and it should go away.  The odd thing is that you'd have this file at all, in that you'd have had a newer one while playing.

Do you use iCloud Drive, and is it syncing the contents of Documents?  One reason I suggested playing offline is that iCloud syncing during a play session can temporarily lock up the user folder and cause crashes, if the timing is just wrong; but iCloud can't sync without an internet connection.  This could also explain where the old copy of Version.tag came from—it was always in cloud storage and somehow got downloaded to your computer again recently.

An old copy of Version.tag may not be the only cause of this error; it's just the only one I've had confirmed over the past few years.  So if deleting it doesn't help, try removing or renaming the entire Sims 3 folder in Documents > Electronic Arts to see whether the error still shows up.

puzzlezaddict Hi, yes, I have iCloud Drive synced to my Documents, but I’ve turned it off for the Electronic Arts folder, or clicked “remove download,” so it shows that it isn’t uploaded. I also tried removing the Version.tag file like you said, and I managed to get the game to work. Now the only issue is that the launcher crashes after the game has started, but it’s still possible to play, so thank you for that. I haven’t tried playing for a longer period yet, so I don’t know if it will start crashing in the middle of the game, but we’ll see.

  • hellokitty11583  Alright, let me know if you run into further issues with the game itself.  The launcher crashing might be inconvenient but doesn't have to break the rest of the game.
