You need to rename the user folder in documents, not the one in programs.
Ah. That makes a big difference. I redid the steps and I got as far as the game opening, closing it, and being left with a new "The Sims 3" folder in documents.
Yet I'm still getting: "The launcher has stopped working"

I deleted what you suggested and the game runs fine. I see I can play without the launcher but it's to the point where I want to get it to work out of sheer stubbornness.
That looks fine. I assume you also have enough space left on your hard disc ?
Did you clean out your registry when you reinstalled ? It sound like something is off with the installation. Repairing the game didn't work either, right ?
You get the message with nothing put back, right ?

-close Origin and game >go to document\electronic arts\sims 3\dc cache and delete the missingdeps.idx
-it works for me just fine
-sims 3 plays normal after thatNOTE if you play without a launcher your stuff will still be saved.
