Sims 3 not detecting GPU, despite modified configuration files

Hi, I have a problem with GPU on sims 3. Despite the fact that i added my GPU to GraphicsRules.sgr and GraphicsCards.sgr files, the game cannot detect my graphic card (Nvidia RTX 3050). As I know, graphic card is installed propeprly on my laptop. In deviceconfig.log, it says it is found my graphic card, but it shows, that driver is still Microsoft Basic Render Driver.

Anyone has an idea why my GPU is not detected properly?

  • @szymon2512  The Basic Render Driver is what the system uses when it doesn't have a proper graphics driver installed.  So please download and install the newest Nvidia driver, which you can find here:

    https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/

Run the installer as an admin: right-click the download and select "Run as administrator."  Restart your computer afterwards and before trying to play.

As a side note, the entry you've added to GraphicsCards.sgr is incorrect: it refers to the basic driver and not to your RTX 3050.  So once you do have the proper driver installed, and you see the RTX 3050 listed in your DeviceConfig where you now see the basic driver, go back and add the new device ID to GraphicsCards.  GraphicsRules should be fine.

If this doesn't help, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

@puzzlezaddict  thanks for your response. I installed NVIDIA driver according to your instruction. Unfortunately, this doesn't help. On dxdiag, there is no information about NVIDIA GPU. I think it is strange, because on device manager GPU is visible. Do you have any idea, why it looks like this?

Edit: I finally managed to find a solution. In my case, the solution is:

from the windows start panel go to settings -> System -> display - graphic settings. Then, I clicked on Browse application button and selected TS3W.exe file. After that I set high performance on sims app, and it works! I tried to do the same thing from NVIDIA control panel, but it didn't work.

Anyway thanks for your help 🙂

@szymon2512  Your laptop is actually missing the driver for the integrated graphics chip.  The information for the RTX 3050 is further down in the dxdiag.  It's normal for a dxdiag from a dual-GPU laptop to list the iGPU first, then the dedicated card, but I can see how that might be misleading if you didn't know what you were looking at.

Anyway, please install the AMD graphics driver listed here:

    https://www.asus.com/laptops/for-gaming/tuf-gaming/2021-asus-tuf-gaming-a15/helpdesk_download?model2Name=FA506NC

Restart after installing and before doing anything else.  Even if Sims 3 doesn't necessarily need this, it will make other tasks that use the iGPU run a lot better.
