Sims 3 Pets on 3DS Unable to "Go To Town"

When I began my game on Sims 3 - Pets for my 3DS, I set up my family (of three individuals) and then picked a house and moved in. There are two blue icons on the road where my lot ends, but I am unable to select them or interact with them in any way. My sims have become 'stir crazy' and I am unable to "go to town" to get pets and interact with other Sims. Advice?
