sorry about the length but i want to be detailed, as although i’m experiencing some very similars issue as many others right now, some aspects of my situation are unique. seems like i chose a very bad time to get back into TS3 :/
after years of not playing The Sims 3 i finally got a nice gaming PC a couple of days ago, and as soon as we got it set up i tried to download Origin and quickly realized it was not possible.
the email connected to my Origin (now EA🙄) account is pretty much used for only that, just Origin/EA for The Sims. so after years of not being touched due to my not playing The Sims, i had to reactivate that email account so that i could sign into EA and verify that it was me. this is after already trying and failing to receive password reset emails from EA earlier that day, but luckily i was eventually able to figure that out on my own. upon reactivating my email account i was informed that i “would start receiving emails shortly” which felt vague but i figured it could take a while so i attributed the EA emails not coming through to that. i spent over an hour requesting verification codes, waiting, refreshing, waiting, requesting a new code, rinse, repeat. zero emails came through. i eventually grew impatient and decided to send myself an email to see if i would get it and it came through right away.
i gave up for the night and decided to contact EA this morning. unfortunately it seems like live chat is no longer available and the only decent option to contact them is by phone call. so, i called them. the man i spoke to was very helpful and sent me verification code and everything no problem. i was excited to have resolved the issue and to be able to finally play TS3 again but now every time i press the play button on the launcher, it just opens the EA app. so when i double click The Sims 3 on the EA app, it opens the launcher. when i double click the play button again on the launcher, it once again opens the EA app. i have yet to find a solution
@stepheny1321 Does this nice gaming PC happen to have a 12th-gen Intel processor? If so, you're likely experiencing this issue:

yes i do actually, that must be the issue. is the patch a safe solution? im not incredibly tech savvy so im of course nervous about the idea installing unofficial patches.

@stepheny1321 The patch is quite safe, having been used by a large number of players since it was released. Its source code is on GitHub, and the developer has made other widely-used tools like the Smooth Patch, which I've used for almost 18 months without issues. I completely understand why you'd be cautious, and I would be too, but I promise I wouldn't recommend this if I didn't have confidence in both its safety and efficacy.
