Sims Disappear After Returning from University

My sims disappear when traveling home from university!! After graduation and moving home time, I have the loading screen, then when I return home, all of my sims are gone. Only my pets that I left home are there, but soon get taken by a social worker because there are "no adults in the household". This forces me to go into edit town or CAS, where my sims are nowhere to be found in the library or anywhere else.

Backstory: So I had my entire family (2 adults, 3 young adults) enrolled in University, except for the two pets obviously. When they went to their graduation, it was buggy and they couldn't all go into the ceremony due to a huge horde of sims trying to get in at once. I know this is a common bug so I looked up solutions and decided to go to a previous save, do testingcheatsenabled true and delete the extra sims blocking the door.  It worked great and all of my sims got in fine and graduated and got their extra trait, no problem! The only thing is, I had invited some friends from my hometown and I think I may have deleted a few of them. I now know upon reading Sims forums that inviting friends is a cause for bugs and problems and deleting them probably really messed up my travel home. (Apparently if your guest sims don't travel home properly before your sims do, that causes travel bugs) But the issue is, I don't have a save file from before I invited friends or before I deleted extra people at graduation. All I have is a save file of a couple hours before the moving van comes. 

So far I have tried to resetSim. I have tried to go into edit town in university and save my household to the library so I can just place a copy of them in my home town after the social worker comes. I have my pets saved under a different family I merged with so I can get them back fairly easily. The only problem is, I try to save my household to the library and it says "Processing" then they don't appear in the library. I've tried to do testingcheatsenabled true and save each sim individually to the library in CAS. This doesn't work either, they are not found in the library anywhere. I've even tried sharing them, but they fail to save. It's a dorm household I'm trying to save, so there are a few extra roommates I'm saving with them but that's no big deal, I can evict them later. But nothing will save. Even after switching the lot to residential. 

Has anyone had these problems? Basically I either need to fix the travel bug that erases my sims every time I travel home or I need to figure out how to save my sims to the library so I can copy them in their hometown later. Or any other solutions I am open to, but this is a legacy family I really don't want to lose.
