Sims portraits don't show up in ANY game after University Life glitch

So here it goes...

I was playing a normal Sims game and sent two sims to college. The first year was fine, they came home and the game continued normally. When I returned to college however, my game glitched. The graduation wouldn't work, they just stood outside forever until they just changed back into normal clothes (they never graudated). When they got back to the neighborhood, they just stood at the edge of town (not at their home) and their portraits were completely gone. I couldn't select them or interact with them. I quit the game without saving and retried the graduation, WITHOUT inviting anyone to the grad. This time, ONE sim graduated but the other never went in. They returned to the neighborhood and the same thing happened. I quit and tried again, this time dropping out of Uni instead of graduating. Same thing happend back at the neighborhood. This time, I just evicted the family and placed them back. It worked find after that, and I moved them out of that family (leaving the mother and her son behind) and to a new lot where I built them a house (I now only had the two sims I took to college and their son). I saved and quit the game, but when I returned, the sims' portraits were gone again and no cheats would work, and they also had $0 no matter what I sold. I realized I duplicated the family when I re-placed them back into the neighborhood (meaning I had the whole family in the original house, and then part of the family in the house where I moved them after the eviction, then the other part of the family [my active household] in the house I built). I quit and tried to open another saved game, but when I opened that, none of THOSE sims portraits appeared. This game has nothing to do with the corrupted one and I never used college in that game.

I looked for solutions but there doesn't seem to be any, but I think the source of the problem came from the UL glitch when they couldn't graduate and then the duplicated family. So I went back to the corrupted family and deleted BOTH copies of the active household (the two college sims and their son), so all I had left was the part of the family that never went to college (the mother and her other son). That family worked fine after that, and it's like the corrupted college sims never existed (their portraits under the mother's Relationships were gone). I saved that game and returned to the other game that I tried opening before. ONE of the sims portraits showed up and worked fine, but her son's and the cat's didn't. The Sim that showed up was the only one I made in CAS (this game is old, too, and I hadn't played in awhile). I'm too scared to open any other saved files, in case they are or become corrupted.

I am extremely scared that all of my save files are corrupted. If this is true, than that ONE glitch has completely destroyed all of my Sims games. I have 10 expansion packs (11 if you count base game), and many many saved games. And yes, I DO use custom content, but I delete ones that cause problems. I have not downloaded any MODs though (I'm not even sure I know what those are). I don't think running the game without CC will help anything.

If all of my games ARE corrupted, I'm done. I am NOT going to start from scratch after YEARS AND YEARS of playing these games. I also would want some sort of compensation, since I have spent probably $400+ on these games, only to have University Life completely crash everything. I have researched other problems similar to mine, and it seems people have the same problem with UL, with Sims not being able to graduate and then having them get stuck and become unplayable. Except with mine, it has possibly corrupted my other games as well.

PLEASE help me, I don't want to lose EVERYTHING I have ever done on these games. I have had these games for YEARS and have never had a problem until now. I have NOT tried to re-install any of the games (such as UL), for I'm not sure how without messing up my save files. PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!

  • Did you go through the main menu to try another game or did you completely turn off your game, restart it and then start the other game ?

It seems that not turning of the game inbetween loading games, can carry over a corruption from one savegame to another.

What I would try is this, backup all of your games to a folder outside the game, then start the game and see if that other savegame is corrupted too or not. If it's not, you're fine and it was just a problem from switching games.

In the future, it's always a good idea to backup your important saves to an external hard or flash drive for safekeeping.

  • I had just gone back to the main menu and selected another game. Then I restarted the game and opened those two files. If what you said is true, then the corruption might have went to the other game.

I'm looking through my saves now (in documents) and moving them to my flash drive (I have done this before but haven't updated it in awhile). Something insteresting came up though -- for every file I have, there is a backup file below it, and under some files, there is a "bad" file.

Here's an example of a normal file folder:

    Allen.sims3

    Allen.sims3.backup

Here's an example with a bad file below:

    Calloway.sims3

    Calloway.sims3.backup

    Calloway.sims3.bad

The Calloway one is the file that was NOT the college glitch (named Mitchell), but the game I opened after that became corrupted that I talked about above. The college file does not have a "bad" file. I am only moving the original files to the flashdrive (not the backup or bad). I did not move over the Calloway or Mitchell files.

Back up files are ok its just the bad files. Did you get error 12 saves or other error saves? When ever you try to save and you get an error notice, it generates a bad file. If you have an error save just log out of your game and check for bad files and remove them.

The reason you have back up files is because you are just hitting save not save as. When you hit just save (not save as) the game overwrites your previous save. Try save as and renaming the file each time you save. This will generate a new save rather than an overwirte save

EDIT to Add cleaning out your cashe files too should help it cleans the game. Files will regerate themselves

Delete the the .bad file. It can cause issues.

Did you try saving that file when it opened corrupted ?

I would always close the game and restart it before opening another savegame so corruption can't carry over. I think you should be fine if you do that. Also backup your stuff on a regular basis.
