I'm having the same problem. My sim gets to the top of the stairs leading to the porch, then turns around and goes back down the stairs. Even the NPCs (like the paper boy) are doing this. There is nothing blocking the path. I'm getting pretty frustrated.
I never did find a solution to this, I ended up deleting my game and restarting, now I'm living in the same house I was before with a different family, and they can go through the doors and gates just fine! I don't know what happened there...
