That's a curious issue indeed.
Did you try downloading the super patch yet ? It's a patch that's 1.3 GB in size and it replaces all files and not just the new ones since your latest patch. It's possible since you're at 1.42 that you were offered the super patch and not incremental but if the patch you downloaded was smaller, I'd try the super patch.
Worth a shot.
if it doesn't work, I would reinstall the base game only.

yes the patch is 1.3gb! i will try installing the patch for a few more times before re-installing the whole game then.

So you're playing the chinese version, is that correct. Game bought in China ? Disc or download ?
Can you play with the new features without logging in ?
mine is Hong Kong tranditional Chinese version, with disk. And I am sure it is NOT a pirate good.
Not sure what do you mean by "the new features"? The game worked perfectly on my old vista computer.
Actually it is working well in the win8 computer now, with all the updated stuffs functioning. The problem is that the version number in the launcher remains and I couldn't install the University Life with the old version number.
I realize that it pops out and said there are new "store update" but it needs the latest game update to do so. Though I haven't install or download any items on sims3.com or other webpages now, not even the Riverview world.
Another thing is that, in the launcher update screen, where you tick TS3_1.55.40020xx_update.exe and click" update" there, there is a window that suppose to be showing what 1.55 is updating there right? The window linked to sims3.com but with 404 pages not found. And now when I use my chrome to go sims3.com > games > update > game/store update, no items are found in HK settings, while there are so many in US setting! I wonder if this is the problem? Tried installing the US patch and it said the language doens't match.
