Bronwin,
Read the whole thing first before making any changes. Are you sure you
wanted edits from a technical writer? LOL.
Title - procedure has two e's in it
Assumptions - Prerequisites might be more accurate
Step 1 - Make Uncheck that box Unselect that box. Last sentence. When you see that notification, DON'T do the update. You didn't call it update/patch in the previous two instances. Go to the next step is obvious.
Step 2 - Make origin download a hotlink?
Step 3 - desktop not desk top. Remove The reason that.
Step 4 - check box not box. download not down load.
Remove 'EA has put out bad patches in the past'. Never admit mistakes on
behalf of the company. You need to use the Super Patcher. The Super
Patcher is an official EA patch, so don't hesitate to use it.
Next paragraph. Remove first two sentences. Don't explain what a failed
patch does; they don't need to understand that. Start with The Super
Patcher will force... It's confusing to say Forums-General
Discussions-Technical Discussions. As the very first item. Say as the
very first thread. Remove Super Patches are quite large. You say that in
the next sentence. The last Super Patcher for patch 1.50 was 1.2 GB...
Remove next sentence about self-executable file. If you are going to say
you might have to install it as an administrator, then tell them how.
Remove last sentence in paragraph. Remove stand-alone sentence telling
them to go to next step, it's obvious.
Step 5 - (My) not (my). Remove Go to the next step.
Step 6 - I will stop saying remove go to the next step. Just make that a
global edit. You don't tell them what to do if their installation doesn't work. But hold off saying anything here until you read my overall comments at the end.
Step 9 - you still have bad file(s) ... What you can do is allow
Step 10 - Add (My). Remove simple. etc.,
Step 11 - Uninstall and Reinstall all your games. Add (My). It's
confusing to say that moving the The Sims 3 folder acts as a complete
uninstall and reinstall of all your games. Does it really?
substep a. Some people might not want to install an unknown application.
I run into this quite a bit. Maybe include the link to manually
uninstalling the Sims 3?
c add (My) okay, make this a global edit too
e add what to do if they don't use Revo
f I don't understand the first sentence. Tell them which steps to follow. If you follow my advice under overall comments, you can refer them to a section.
h Give them the link to The Sims 3 wikipedia site that has a list of the
games released in order.
Overall comments
I think you should break down your steps into sections for the following
reasons:
-People get overwhelmed when there is a long series of steps to take. In
technical writing, the rule is usually 7 steps or less in a procedure.
-You can refer people to the patching section from the reinstall section.
-People can either follow the EP install section or the patch install
section.
-The test section should be a separate section that people can follow
whether they used the EP or the patch install section.
-You could consolidate your testing steps.
-It was confusing that the steps contained both patching and installing an EP both, they might do one or the other but not both?
So the sections would be something like this:
Install a patch
Install an EP or SP
Test the installation
Reinstall the games
I would make the edits from the steps first, so the steps line up with
the edits before you break it up into sections.
