A sure fix for A serious error has occurred. Often shortened to A serious error has occurred. The whole message is A serious error has occurred while loading <townname>.sims3.

Update: OP says everytime she shuts down her computer, the folder goes back to being read-only. Anyone have a clue what could cause that?
