The Sims 3 Options.ini not updating // Can't save Graphics or Game options

I hope someone might be able to advise me of something to try that I haven't tried already. It seems that my Sims 3 won't save any options I select in game, with the exception of Windowed mode and Resolution. All other graphics options will not hold when I change them and attempt to save them. I make the changes, hit the check mark, then come back to the Options window to see if they stay and they've default back to the lowest settings. This also applies to other options in the various other menu tabs.

I've verified that the entire directory where my Options.ini file is stored is not read only. I've deleted both the options.ini and the deviceconfig.log file so the game generates new ones upon start up. I have all Sims executables set to run as administrator in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode. Does anyone else who has had a similar problem have any suggestions that I might be missing?

  • Could you open the ini file with a text editor and see if it sticks if you change something in there directly ?

  • Crinrict, thanks for responding. I'll try this as soon as I get home and see if it does anything. It hadn't occurred to me to actually attempt to put anything in the file and save it since I wasn't sure if this would have any negative effect on how the game loads.

    I should add that this is happening in addition to the game not recognizing my hardware/graphics card, even after attempting and re-attempting the guide for adding your card to the list of recognized cards. Devicelog.config is empty save for a few headers and never populates, even after starting the game.

    I'm not too concerned with the graphics card issue at the present though, since I can still play the game. Figured I'd mention it in case it has any bearing on the initially reported issue. Mostly worried about not being able to modify my gameplay options.

    You do have admin rights on your computer, right ? Also how full is your hard drive ?

  • Yes, I'm administrator on my machine. I have two different hard drives and have attempted installing the game on both, just in case there was some sort of permissions issue going on between the two drives. As for space, my storage drive had over 70 gigabytes free with the game installed. After uninstalling then reinstalling on my OS drive where it currently is there are approximately 7 gigs free.

  • I am able to add text manually to the ini file and it does save it, even after opening and closing the game.

    Can you upload your ini file to some file sharing site and PM me the link so I can check if everything necessary is in there ?

    Did you try to change something in game again after the manual changes ? Do the manual changes actually reflect in your settings ?

  • I can actually paste the entirety of the .ini file within this message, it's that small. It doesn't reflect nearly any of the settings that should be showing in there from what I've seen of other's .ini files. See below:

    [options]
    fullscreen = 1

    pseudoresolution = 0,0

    lastdevice = 0;1002;6798;47157

    resolution = 1920 1080 60

    showncardnotrecognizedwarning = 1

    TESTESTESTEST

    Obviously the TESTESTESTEST is what I added myself. If I change any of the settings, for example, fullscreen or showncardnotrecognizedwarning those changes will take effect in the game.
