I was told that the patcher was not compatible with windows 8.1 and that i should downgrade to windows 7...but i am not comfortable doing that just yet.

I have installed Origin and installed The Sims 3 base game, but when I went to install my expansion packs, it said that I needed to update my base game before I can do anything with the expansions. So I tried to update it but, when nearly complete with the update, a window pops up saying

And it gave me the options to ABORT, RETRY, or IGNORE.
I went in, uninstalled both the game and Origin, restarted my computer, retried everything, and it still did it. I've looked up for others having had problems with this and I haven't found anything that matches my problem. Can anyone help me with this? Any suggestions?
