To see if you can get a refund you would need to contact EA's customer services.

However it would first be worth trying a new installation to see if you can get it working. It is not unususal for Origin downloads to be corrupted. Perhaps this is the problem. Or possibly the game is installed right but you are getting one of the many problems from playing on a Mac due to the way it was converted to work on the Mac operating system. There are things you can do to try to improve the experience.

How much RAM does your Mac have?

This would be my advice. First, uninstall the game and get rid of the stray files. This will ensure a clean start. Then reinstall from Origin using the procedure below. Be sure to patch the base game up to date. Then follow the tips for Mac simmers on purging RAM etc. If it still won't work then I'm out of ideas.

Uninstalling

When you uninstall TS3 games on your Mac using the uninstaller, the game leaves behind stray files and isn't completely removed from your computer. These files may conflict with future installations. It is best to completely remove them. BluebellFlora's website provides a guide on how to do this:

After cleanly uninstalling, install the base game and patch it up to date. If you cannot update via the Launcher, download and apply the latest cumulative manual patch (called the superpatch) for Mac.

Check that your game works properly. Then install any EPs and SPs that you own, in order of release date.

Using Origin

To download and install games through Origin:

Download and install the Origin client for Mac and make sure it is up-to-date. If you already have Origin on your Mac but are having problems with downloading or installing games, delete the client and download a new copy (this sometimes fixes issues with downloading). The latest version can be downloaded from here:http://www.dm.origin.com/mac/download

Additional advice on how to download games (thank you Tremayne for this tip):
When downloading from Origin, do NOT use the first install icon. Move your cursor over the game cover and click on the information (letter i) and then click on the install button from there. For some reason, downloads from Origin frequently become corrupted. Using the i reduces the chance of your download being corrupted. If you have already been unfortunate and have a corrupted download, then it is important to remove all traces of this before trying again, by doing a thorough, clean uninstallation first.

Are you running anti-virus software or any clean-up applications? If so, disable these, as they might be deleting files that Origin needs. A fast, stable internet connection will also help you.

Patching

Many simmers find that patching their game via the "Game Updates" tab of the Launcher does not work properly. It is then better to download and apply the manual superpatch. It is important to download the Mac version rather than the PC version, and to pick the right one for your region.

Tips for Mac simmers

Unfortunately a lot of TS3 players encounter problems when playing the game on their Mac. These can include crashing and freezing. A lot of these issues can be avoided or at least improved by the following measures.

Firstly, manually reset your RAM while playing. See BluebellFlora's guide on how to do this: http://bluebellflora.com/the-sims-3-on-a-mac/resetting-ram-during-gameplay/

I restart my computer before I play TS3. The memory used as seen in Activity Monitor is at about 3GB after the restart. If I open the Launcher it goes up to around 11 GB (that's all I've done - just opened the Launcher!). At this point I reset the RAM. Then I hit play and get through the opening sequence. I then press cmd-return to put the game in windowed mode from time to time while playing (and always before saving or using CAS). That way I can keep an eye on the memory and reset RAM if necessary. Being in windowed mode also allows you to close the game using force quit if it freezes up - it's better to crash the game than your whole computer.

Second tip is to save frequently. I save at least once per sim day. Use the option to Save or Save As, rather than the combined Save and Quit.

Make sure you are patched up to date. The 1.63 patch included fixes for Mac simmers that did actually improve the stability of the game on our operating systems, so it is well worth updating.

That uninstalling process does not work for me. I open up Origin and it still has 'Play' as the option, not 'Install'

There has got to be an easier way to uninstall / solve this issue??????

I have been looking on the forums and this is an issue that has been happening for 4-5 years, and still no solution from EA. So people in 2014 are buying this game with a 5 yr old problem!! It's a disgrace.

My MacBook Air has 8GB RAM.

So you have no TS3 files on your Mac hard drive in Applications? How odd.

Look in Preferences in Origin and delete any TS3-related files you find. That should allow you to recommence downloading from Origin. But first make sure you have removed the files from your Mac (if there are any).

OK, so you have uninstalled and cleaned the computer of all TS3 and Origin files? In that case start from scratch, download a new copy of Origin and start installing the game using the directions I posted previously under "Using Origin". Once you have a fresh installation of the game, open the Launcher and see what happens. Monitor the RAM usage using Activity Monitor while the Launcher opens. Purge the RAM before clicking Play on the Launcher.

Does it work now or still an error?

Do I install the updates when prompted? Or use Superpatch update on The Sims 3?

Installed them all again completly with no updates and still the same **bleep**-poor message.

You definitely want to update. The patch 1.63 contained fixes for the Mac version of the game, so you need to get patched to that or higher (the current patch is 1.67 so best to just get right up to date). I personally have always managed to patch with my Launcher, but it fails for lots of other people. The recommended method is the superpatch. Instructions with link below.

I'm having this problem on my Macbook Pro, so glad I'm not the only one! Only I bought the physical copy of the starter patch and it's still playing up. Managed to patch Late Night but that's it. Can't update High-End Loft without the unknown error popping up halfway through and can't open the launcher without it popping up either. I was trying to avoid downloading the super patch because my internet is so slow but I think I'm going to have to :/
