I experienced this when trying to edit engaged sims. In my game I can edit all kinds of relationships but engaged. I will try to replicate your situation and to see if I can think of any solution.

I thought this was a really good idea so I just tested it by breaking up with Leo and then going through the genetic motions again, but the exact same problem occurs regardless of his engagement status ☹️
