Residential Rental Lot "Unknown Failure" Create a Unit

I have researched the issue and it seems the question is easily understood and gets the same few answers every time. For this reason, I will begin by saying that I am not using custom content, the lot was never previously built on, and that I built the apartment from scratch in build mode from the manage worlds tab.

Before I ever laid the foundation of the apartment building, I had made the lot a residential rental. After building several units I attempted to begin labeling them. I am able to mark areas as either 'shared' or the game labeled unit, without problem. When attempting to create a new unit, the game flashes a red "unknown failure" message and no new unit is created. The "unknown failure" message also occurs when attempting to rename the game labeled unit name, or when trying to input the number of beds or baths.

To rectify the issue I have tried

  • Restarting the game.
  • Changing the unit to residential, exiting the game, returning and changing back to residential rental.
  • Leaving manage worlds tab, moving a sim to the lot, entering build mode.

None of these methods changed any of the results, I still receive the "unknown failure" message when attempting to label the units. I have had successful residential rental lots in the past, though this is the first I have ever tried to build an apartment from build mode rather than during a Sims' midlife crisis live mode. I would have just carried on and used my Sim household to build an apartment building from, as usual, but I quite like the build I just made and I would like to use it as intended.

I haven't had any problems with the residential rentals that I've build.  But I did build mine a little differently in that I did not change the venue type until after I had completed the build, then set the venue to residential rental and assigned the spaces to the apartments.  Both buildings I've done had 6 apartments.  So, maybe that has something to do with causing your problem since you set the lot as residential rental first.  Just a guess though.

But here's something you can try to get the lot fixed.  First thing, run a game repair and delete the localthumbcache file.  Start the game and go to the lot in build mode.  Undo all the space assignments.  Set the lot to residential.  Save the lot to your library.   Bulldoze the lot (don't just load the copy on top of the existing build).  Replace the lot with the copy from your Library.  Then enter the lot from the map.  Change the venue to residential rental.  Assign the spaces to the apartments.

    Hope this helps.
