Yes, it's okay to start with a new version of your template. Just don't change the townies or get rid of the premades.
For future reference, a thumb drive is a memory storage device that costs about $20-$30 and gives you 4G of memory. You can plug it into one of the ports on your laptop and use it to boost performance or store files on it if you're running out of space.
