guardian? would be a replacement term
Possibly.
But a lot of different people can be a guardian, such as a grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousin, friend of the family, and lets face it, while you're a minor, your parents are your guardians.
But godparent today doesn't necessary means religion-oriented as it once did..
It doesn't matter. It contains a religious term, thus isn't really all that compatible with a secular game.
But parents are called PARENTS.. guardians only apply if the parents either a)are unable to raise the child themselves (ie too poor for instance) or b)they're dead. At different points when I was child, different people were my guardian-for about 3-4 years during the first couple of days of March Break in Ontario-my older sister and I would be dropped off at our Aunt's and Mom and Dad would go to a Teacher's meeting. So during that time our Aunt and Uncle were our guardians. At another times our maternal grandparents would come down and look after us. For several years until my now ex-neighbour's husband died.. my ex-neighbour's and her husband would be my guardians if I was sick or she would be if I needed to be looked after if my parents were getting let say my sister from school (university). And in my early years of elementary school-a parent on the block right down from the school would be my guardian if I was sick. At times-if I was at a friend's house-their parents were my guardians. In a sense-my church congreation were my guardians in one way or another when I wasn't with Mom. Same with girl Guides leaders (until my mom had to come with us due to my issues). Once my own sister was my guardian (she was 17) for some weeks in the summer with some help from the ex-neighbour.
BTW-my church the entire congreation is a child's godparents and we have at least one instant where a family was orphaned and their youngest child was 15 (a boy in my grade) so the family's grandma had to move in. Also this church sends this family a hamper around Christmastime. Oh this family's mom was my guardian at one point when my sister was still in high school with one of the boy's sisters.
but so what would you call a person who is not the person's actually parent but is there in case of death of children's parent to raise them to adults? We only have two actually chooses to call them godparent or Guardian (which is the non-relgious aspect)
Technically godparent could be anything a aunt, uncle, family friend, an older cousin, etc
