How should EA/Maxis FIX the TS4 Personality System?

Spoiler
We're already 9 EPs, 8 GPs, and 16 SPs into TS4 and yet our Sims have never felt less lifelike. Imo, TS2 still has the most multidimensional Sims. While it just assumed personalities based on how you rate your Sim out of the 10 measly "qualities" zodiacs stereotypically exhibit (a feature carried over from TS1); it made up for it with aspirations (wants & fears), interests, chemistry (turn-ons & turn-offs on top of zodiac sign compatibility), and how Sims actually react to their own memories and environment.

In TS3, these were all replaced with the 60+ base game traits. You choose five from these and it allows you to flesh out your Sims without regard of their zodiac signs because sometimes you can be a Cancer and not be a doormat. These traits affect not only your Sim's wishes and mood when doing a task or dealing with other Sims but it also provides gameplay easter eggs (i.e. Unlucky Sims will not die except of old age). Zodiac, memories, and favorites do make a comeback but they are just something for your Sims to talk about and do not actually affect attraction.

TS4 introduced the emotion system which was supposed to make the Sims more reactive to in-game events and interactions with objects and/or other Sims. It combined the TS2 aspirations and the TS3 moodlets but it's also probably the reason why all TS4 Sims act same-y. Your Sim with the Romantic trait doesn't react any differently from another Sim who is being flirty. With the recent decision to hide whims, TS4 traits have been reduced to just a multiplier that makes your Sim experience an emotion more frequently.

TL;DR Unfortunately, unless they rework how traits affect our poor TS4 Sims outside of the current emotion system, the only way to provide some sort of depth to them is through mods. Some of these mods—Slice of Life, Meaningful Stories, Personality Please, and even that one adult mod—add features that I feel the Sims Studio could expound on and make more robust. That said, which of these features would you want to make into the official personality overhaul?

I want traits to have more impact on sim behavior, AND I want the emotion system to be more balanced between positive and negative emotions.

How does an unmodded game handle emotions anyway? I've had Meaningful Stories since forever.
  • @Sim2Spore This is well thought out. Thanks for referring your thread. You're right that the character traits do actually make the Sims one-dimensional.

In TS3 you don't notice how shallow they are because you can pick 5-7 at once (depending on your EP's and not counting the reward traits that you have). The traits were also the ones that gave you moodlets and they all affect how your Sims act on their own. In TS4 however they changed it to how your sims would react to the stimulus. Traits intensify the 15 emotions available in-game and you're only allowed to have 3. I think your method might be closer to what they'll actually implement. Since they've brought back the Environment (TS2 Needs: Room) and Comfort (also from TS2) gameplay aspect with the latest patch, it might not be far off that they'd give us something that would act similar to the Personality Points too. This could be tied to a zodiac system but I honestly don't want that stuff anymore because we'd only be limited back to 12.

Really hard to decide between these options. Obviously traits should form some of your Sims personality and what you decide on be it loner mean vegan bro or neat should truly impact how your Sim behaves and what you see them doing more often.

Loner Sims should be doing activities alone more often and not found chatting up the town where ever they go

A vegan Sim should always have a bubble with a vegetable above their head when they first introduce themselves like "Hi I'm a vegan" and have that pop up when they talk a lot.

A bro should be talking a lot about sports want to play sports often at this time all they do is get energized and confident any Sim can do that. What's really sad is there is not even a single sport Sims can play together to truly play out this trait with other bros.

A mean Sim should be able to be seen across a room maybe picking a fight looking angry when someone they don't like is talking to them which would also require improved relationships. If I pick mean I want to see it in behavior not a Sim who walks around with a smile all day.

A neat Sim should randomly dust an object or maybe pull out a vacuum the Sim "having fun" while doing household chores is not cutting it for me

Now obviously improved traits are meaningless unless this game gives them new animations and real activities to go along with them

I agree with all of these! The Eco Lifestyle EP added something like this. (That EP did a lot of things right, if only it weren’t so buggy!) Sims with the Recycle Disciple trait enjoy rummaging through the trash for recyclables, they also get tense when they haven’t recycled for a while. If left unattended, they swipe and recycle things they own without the player’s permission. How chaotic lol! I feel it’s a happy medium between the TS3 and TS4 traits and, for me, it’s a step in the right direction to how traits should affect our Sims. Now, that example is only for Lifestyle traits, I’m sure the Studio can think up more creative solutions for Social and Hobby ones. (I would also love a group sports for Sims!) We have a lot of packs now, so they can revisit some of their older content and animations and tie them in to the existing traits.
  • Traits should influence behaviours, which in turn leads to reactions based on traits.
Memories like in Sims 2 should return, which makes a Sim more unique.
Furthermore, there should be fears like in Sims 2 and an attraction system, though I would like to see that improved upon.
The relation ship pannel needs to have a family filter.
