When I first started building, I'd look up real life floor plans online, and try to copy with allowances for Sims constraints and dimensions as best I could.
One way to help, is as a form of practice (you do not have to save), play around with trying to copy your own room/home/apartment space. You can see where Sims falls short, or has issues with real life floor plants and dimensions.
Also, it doesn't hurt to look up Feng Shui "do's", "don'ts" and "fixes", for cheats too.
