Really, I think if I'd stood where Jake was and saw what he saw, I'd be lucky to manage "whoa."

I think, he needed to just let go. He's been the leader for hundreds of years, after all. He's finally recognized that, in order to really hand over his authority, he needs to let go completely. If he stayed, everyone would just look to him anyway and, whether he meant to or not, he would fall back into a habit of leading. That what he meant, when he referred to his other would-be successors. He's been here before.
In the end, I think Kristopher is happy. He's carried the burden of leadership for hundreds of years and now he finally gets to put that down. He's moving on. Yeah, he's leaving Jake with that burden in the middle of major crisis... I think there is a bit of selfishness there... but he's not leaving Jake alone or without people to guide him. He genuinely believes he's doing what's best, for Jake, for Moonwood Mill and for all his people. I think it proves that Kristopher is a great leader.
