Build-n-Share Challenge #24
#24 Mr. McGregor's Farm This Week’s Challenge Specifics: "Your two o'clock appointment is here," Rose calls into your office after softly knocking.
Startled from your closing notes on the Franklin file, you set the file aside and stand to meet Atholl McGregor, a grizzled man dressed in coveralls with stooped shoulders. He shakes your hand with surprising firmness, however. There's still a great deal of strength in the old farmer.
"Good morning," he says gruffly. "I need a new house. The old one is overrun with rabbits, and I've had just about all I can take of it."
"Oh, well, that is a shame," you murmur somewhat taken aback by his directness.
"Ayuh. A pure shame," Mr. McGregor agrees. "There's some what thinks those little buggers is real cute, but I know different. Rabbits are devious. A real menace if you ask me."
Mr. McGregor has apparently been dealing with a different kind of rabbit than you've personally encountered. Trying to get the meeting back on track, you politely ask, "How is it that I can help you?"
"Like I said, I need a new house. I sold the old farm to this lady what's crazy about rabbits. Putter, I think her name was. Nope," he shakes his head and taps his chin in thought, "that weren't it. Potter, maybe? No matter. They're her problem now. I'm moving to Willow Creek. Bought me some land there. And I need you to build me a new house."
"We can certainly do that for you," you assure Mr. McGregor. "Are you retiring, or will you still be farming?"
"Oh, I'll still be farming," he declares with a determined gleam in his eye. "Those rabbits ain't got the best of Atholl McGregor just yet. I want this new garden to be protected though. Can't have a repeat of what went on at the old place."
"Not a problem," you assure the client, making a mental note to do a little more research on rabbits.
"Don't need a large place," he continues. "Just me and the missus now. But we do need a guest room for when the grand kids come to spend the summer. And a separate bath for them as well."
You nod as you jot down notes. "Any other requirements?"
"Well, Mrs. McGregor is none too happy with me right now," he confides. "She's a mite attached to the old place. Don't want to move at all."
You nod, certainly understanding, after having spent some time with her husband, how frustrated Mrs. McGregor might feel right now.
"She's real attached to them flower beds of hers. Just another place for rabbits to hide out if you ask me, but she's right fond of them."
"So you'd like some landscaping around the house?" you ask.
"Ayuh," he agrees. "Make it pretty for her. I think it'll go better for me in the long run that way."
You resist the urge to roll your eyes and continue to chat with Atholl for a while, getting down all the specifics. "We can have this done for you in two weeks," you tell Mr. McGregor as you escort him out of the office.
"That'll do," he says brusquely, and you return to your desk, muttering about rabbits as you go.
