So when your you get the notification that your it's a baby's birthday you can select the age up option from the crib. Once your child has gotten an A in elementary school, have your matriarch bake them a cake and then have the child put candles on it and blow them out, they will age up to a teen. Once your teens have achieved an A in high school do the same with the cake. Teens become young adults. Once you have a young adult, go to the household management option and split the household. Move the young adult into their own "household", you can choose to either move them into a house or not. That's how you open up room in your house. On average it's 3 sim days before you can age up a baby, and depending on how fast you get your skills up and continually have your children/teens do their homework you can get them aged up in about 4 sim days for each age group.
