Homesteading Idea

I wanted to share an idea for an expansion pack that I’ve been trying to emulate with the current packs, but I’ve had unsatisfactory success with.

There is a pack for country living, a 1920’s inspired pack, and a vampire pack, however, I’m looking to build a homesteading town inspired by Little House on the Prairie. It’s possible to get somewhat close, but most of what’s available is still too modern. In earlier games, we could travel by car (which I wish they’d bring back - I loved trying to build space for cars and driveways), and it would be really neat to have horses and buggies for this pack. In create a sim, we could choose a “homestead” filter, which would preselect clothing, makeup, hairdos, shoes, and accessories from the time period, in addition to selecting a “game mode” when we exit create a sim to play the game. This game mode would change the starting cash to an amount that is more realistic for the time period, in addition to filtering out all items that wouldn’t exist in this time period as well (overridable using cheats and deselecting “homestead” in the items filter in build mode) which would be priced realistically as well. For example, instead of starting with $20,000, we might start with $5,000, a plot of 20x30 land might cost $100, a horse and buddy might cost $100, a hearth and stone cooking fireplace might be $25, etc…

During that time, settlers would have had to plow their land to make it suitable for building, which might be a neat aspect instead of just bulldozing the terrain. Farming would have been incredibly important, so good soil, plenty of sun, and access to water would be necessary. Trading, bartering, and selling homegoods was vital, and could be incorporated using existing mechanics, as could farming. Apothecary would have been dire as well.

Community was quite possibly one of the most important aspects of the period, so making it possible to create an entire town of people in create a sim, and possible to use a large single plot to create a town (or making it easier to create sims to place into this town, in addition to creating a town with closer plots and using one plots for multiple businesses or houses as would have been common in this time period) would be an interesting aspect to include for this pack.

Just an idea - I’ll keep fiddling around with what’s there, but I hope to see something like this in the future!

thanks!

  • I want a mill, wheat and sugar cane (and/or get sap/syrup from maple trees) that we can mill into flour and sugar (and/or make syrup). Also no phones (or at least no cellphones), more off grid items for water collecting (water well), power (water mill), etc.

I thought that (above mentioned) would be good for a medieval pack but homesteading would work too. I barely remember the little house on the prairie books but I remember the chapter where they made candy with the sap/syrup from the maple trees in the fresh snow :D
