Let Us Set Patchy the Scarecrow to Go Dormant on His Base
This is a small one, but it's been bugging me since Seasons launched. I love Patchy the Scarecrow. He's a fun, quirky addition to gardening lots, and the whole "magical scarecrow who comes to life" gimmick is peak Sims humor. But sometimes... Patchy needs to chill.
The Problem: Patchy Has No Off Switch
Once you place Patchy and he decides he likes your Sims, he becomes a permanent fixture of the household. He wanders around, he chats, he tells jokes, he does his little dance. And that's charming—until it isn't.
Here's when Patchy becomes a problem:
- He's a distraction during events. I'm trying to throw a dinner party, and Patchy is shuffling through the living room trying to tell my guests about fertilizer. My Sims keep autonomously queuing up conversations with him instead of doing what I want them to do.
- He interferes with storytelling. I have a household with a tense family dynamic, and Patchy keeps lightening the mood by being his cheerful straw self. Not every lot wants a permanently cheerful roommate.
- He gets in the way. Literally. He stands in doorways, blocks paths, and wanders into rooms he has no business being in.
- Some players just don't want him active. Plenty of players place Patchy purely for the gardening boost and the aesthetic, with no intention of ever having him come to life. Right now, there's no way to prevent that once he's befriended.
The Solution: A Toggle on Patchy's Base
I propose that clicking on Patchy's base (the wooden stand he's mounted on) should offer a new interaction—something like:
- "Set Patchy to Dormant" / "Wake Patchy"
When set to dormant, Patchy stays on his base, remains decorative, still provides his gardening benefits, but does not come to life or wander the lot. When you want him active again, you click the base and wake him up. This is a simple, diegetic toggle that fits the object perfectly—you're literally telling the scarecrow whether he's on duty or off duty.
Why This Works
- It uses existing UI language. Clicking an object's base to change its behavior is already how lots of Sims objects work. This is intuitive.
- It respects player choice. Players who love chaotic Patchy keep him active. Players who want a quiet garden get a quiet garden.
- It solves the "no off switch" problem without removing Patchy or requiring players to delete and re-place him (which loses his friendship status and any gardening progress).
- It's low-risk. This is a toggle on an existing object, not a new system. It shouldn't break anything.
A Note for the Team
I know Patchy is a legacy feature at this point, and I'm not expecting a major overhaul. But a simple on/off interaction on his base feels like the kind of small, targeted change that could ship in a patch and make a lot of players happy. If he's going to be a roommate, at least let us tell him when to go stand in the yard.
