Patches breaking more than they fix.

EA produces lots of video games. But it seems to me that the sims franchise is the only one that has so many issues, complaints, bugs, and needs constant patches. When EA releases patches to fix bugs and add content updates, they end up introducing new bugs. Then players have to wait for hotfixes and new patch updates. I mean, seriously, who wants to update their game when there is a looming possibility of it breaking after the patch? I've played games with bugs before. I mean, sometimes, depending on the bug. the player can take advantage of it during gameplay. Skyrim is an example of a game I've played, where people were making videos demonstrating how to use bugs to enhance gameplay.

But to my knowledge, no one has ever mentioned finding a bug in the sims 4 that players could use to their advantage. For example, being able to buy groceries from the vendor stalls in henford for free or university students doing poorly on a presentation, but getting a good grade anyway, or a player selling items from the sim's inventory, but the item remains in the sim's inventory, and they keep selling the same item and getting free simoleons.

Instead, there are lists and lists of bugs that break gameplay and then don't get fixed for years. Sometimes, modders release a fix (but not all players use mods) for bugs while players wait for EA to fix it. In the recent patch, EA fixed a bug introduced by discover university, where discovery quests were interrupting event progress. Discover university was released in 2019 and the bug is being fixed in 2024.

I mean, how does EA take up to 5 years to fix bugs while wanting players to continue buying DLCs and updating their game (which usually results in new bugs being introduced)?

  • I’m going to be honest; this isn’t the only franchise that’s plagued by bugs and needs constant patches. Bugs are basically in every game known to man. Now, the introduction of new bugs happens, once again, in all franchises. It’s a byproduct of programming and making something. The reason as to why bugs in the Sims 4 are so prevalent is due to the quantity vs quality mindset the publisher has. Fixing bugs really doesn’t make money whereas releasing a new half-baked pack does. However, there is more to it than that. When you have 100s of developers, things sometimes clash and become almost a requirement for something else to work. Callbacks in code to weird things that, when removed, breaks something else. It’s an eternal loop that has plagued the gaming (and software) industry for a long time.

As for the Skyrim comment, that’s more on the community that ‘loves Bethesda jank’ and gave all the bugs and glitches a free pass. I also want to note that Skyrim was horrid on launch and suffered a lot from it. Mods came along and fixed it, and Bethesda wiped their hands for the most part. One of the most popular mods, at some point, had hundreds, if not a thousand, bug fixes. Just to note, Starfield had the same issues and was not favoured by gamers.

Next point is because why exploit like that when you can easily just give yourself money? It’s a life simulation, not an RPG. Very, very different. You also shouldn’t want bugs to abuse them. It’s a bad mindset to go looking for them or to dwell on them.

Why not be glad that it got fixed? I’m not trying to defend EA, but this isn’t a case of, “LMAO why does EA hate Sims 4 players!? Leaving bugs unpatched.”

The game is 10 years old and needs to be shelved. It’s getting mechanics/things that are seriously hindering the game due to PCs that can’t keep up with it. I would take a barebones Sims 5 over what we have now. While I hope Sims 5 doesn’t do that – spoiler, it will – I can’t stand how laggy Sims 4 is getting, even when my PC surpasses 99% of the average players.

Start on a project that has a stable base, keep that base stable with new DLC/expansions that allow for an easier expansion.

  • I took a few months break because the save corruption bug and repeat CAS distortion bug was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Yes, I keep plenty of backups but it shouldn't be a concern every time I load the game.

I've learned to not get my hopes up with S4 but I'm holding on to some hope that the new team dedicated to bug reports can actually start to make a dent. Right now, things are extra messy because of the recent EP. I started updating mods last night and I'll admit, it's bad timing to check back in. 😵‍💫

The fact that this game is 10 years old definitely makes a difference in my opinion. So many changes upon changes upon changes have been added over the years. On top of that is tons of dlc. by now there are so many possible combinations of owning dlc that there are a lot of variables that have to be factored in. Playtesting all set ups is impossible.

I have reached the point where I wonder how much more the game can handle both in new dlc and game updates. The bugs are the reason why I don't have for rent yet.

On a plus, the team does seem to try to solve things on short notice with all the hot fixes. It would be better if they didn't have to of course but I am glad they do try.

I have been saying this for years everyone should go on strike until EA gets their crap together I purposely keep my updates off because all it does is break my game and I spend sometimes weeks fixing my game. This last update September 2024 I’ve been working on it for weeks and still can’t fix it!!! it’s absolutely ridiculous and for all the money I have spent on this game this should not be happening I think we just need to go back to old-fashioned CD-ROMs and buying games and eliminate all of this crap. Streaming has not improved my gaming experience with sims!!

i hope they fix it soon. i'm almost scared to ever update my game again. it was great until this last patch in Oct or late Sept. But I updated anyway. I couldn't start my game unless I did. But now some lots won't load, my Sims can't do certain actions. These are inconveniences that I can just work around, (but shouldn't have to since I paid to enjoy these features). However, I'm scared to even update my game anymore because I don't want those game-breaking bugs y'all are talking about.

  • For the last 6 months, patch updates have been causing misc. decor items from certain kits and stuff packs to disappear from the build mode catalogue. I've never seen something so ridiculous. How is it that a well - established game developer and publisher produces a product with so many bugs? I imagine EA employs skilled professionals with industry experience. On the whole, the sims franchise is well established and has increased its quality with the release of each new generation. However, there are so many bugs in the 4th generation sims game. I've played games produced by indie developers, which had fewer bugs and better - quality control.

  • i saw a few tittles very similar to this and i agree EA should work on the fixes first before making new packs and they need to refresh the packs because some looks so outdated in my opinion

i can try to report the similar topics to place it here instead since this post is by so far the eldest, maybe you guys are being heard more👍

the more people who response to their struggles it needs to be shared, the more they are being heard

After the natures event patch, my game is broken again. One of the quest was to adopt a pet. I adopted a pet into my household, and when I re-launch the game, my pet wasn’t even a part of my household. The convenience bush has never worked since I bought the game, the logic tables play button isn’t even clickable. It says my SIM does not have permission to use this object. I don’t know by anyone else, but I am sick and tired of spending my money on a game that does not work. EA please stop coming out with these new expansion packs and game packs and kits and things if you can’t fix the fundamental problems with this game. It is truly unfair to the customers.
