Review: The Sims 4 – A Disappointing Step Backward and Lack of Respect for Loyal
As a longtime fan of The Sims franchise, I am deeply disappointed with the direction EA Games has taken with The Sims 4. I purchased the base game years ago, paying a significant amount for it, trusting in the quality and commitment of the franchise to its players. Now, the base game has been made free, but with no compensation or benefits for those of us who invested money from the start. This feels like a slap in the face to loyal fans who helped build the success of The Sims 4.
Moreover, the experience offered by the base game is extremely limited compared to previous editions like The Sims 3. Basic features and customization tools that were once part of the initial package are now locked behind expensive expansion packs. Even as someone who already owns the base game, I find myself needing to spend a fortune just to enjoy an experience that should be standard. EA has turned The Sims 4 into a heavily monetized product, where everything seems to revolve around DLCs.
What’s even more frustrating is realizing that features available in The Sims 3 are now only accessible in The Sims 4 if you purchase additional expansions. Many players resort to pirated content or mods to enhance their gameplay, and while I refuse to take that route because I value having original products, I feel completely undervalued as a consumer. Those of us who bought the base game—and often deluxe or special editions—receive no additional benefits compared to new players who download the game for free today.
EA Games urgently needs to rethink its approach. The Sims 4 has the potential to be an incredible experience, but it’s entirely overshadowed by greedy business practices and a lack of consideration for its long-standing players. The franchise has always been synonymous with creativity, freedom, and innovation, but The Sims 4 seems focused solely on exploiting players’ passion for profit.
I sincerely hope EA Games listens to the community and brings real improvements in the future. What we have today is a shadow of what the franchise once was and what it could still be.
