Should We Be Concerned About Sims 4’s New Pack Toggle?

EA has added a “pack toggle” option in The Sims 4, similar to what The Sims 3 had. On one hand, it makes sense—there are already over 90 packs, and loading all of them can slow down the game. Being able to switch off the ones you don’t use could improve performance.

On the other hand, some people can feel like EA is pushing the responsibility onto players. Instead of fixing bugs and optimizing the engine, they’re basically saying: “Just disable what you get bugs from it.” Others may also see it as a sign of how large the DLC catalog has grown, and probably EA will likely keep adding more and more in the future.

It also raises the question: Has the sheer number of packs already started to push the game’s performance to its limits—and will future packs make this even worse?

So while it’s a helpful feature, it also makes me rethink my spendings. I think from now on I’ll only buy kits, and when it comes to expansions, I’ll only get the ones that feel truly essential or very important to me, otherwise I’ll just skip them.

What you guys think?

  • As of now the "feature" seems very bugged, and it actually broke lilsimsie's game, and she advised us to not use it. James Turner's method to disable packs is a much safer way, so I will continue to trust and use that old method. It has always worked flawlessly.

  • Maybe.

It depends on how the developers makes future packs and how they will balance them, and if the game can handle them all. I disabled lovestruck because I felt that my save couldn't handle it, but my save is old and have a lot of sims and I didn't want 90,000 turn-on and turn-offs in my save file. the pack gives all sims in the game 50 turn-on and turn-offs, I have 1800 sims in my save)

If we start to reach a point where the game can't handle all the packs from smaller saves, then I think that's bad. I don't think we have reached that point yet. but we are getting there with some packs like For Rent.

Enchanted by Nature and ailments is another example but with game balancing.

At some point I hope that EA/Maxis realizes that we can't keep adding things on top of each other, a pack disabling feature is not a solution. They need to start working on the sims5.

so true we need sims 5 or they need to fix sims 4 for good

  • One of the reasons why I stopped buying anything is because of all those stupid low end kits which clutter up the catalog so much more. Half of the stuff is never used lol. And just imagine if all those packs would actually work together without issues, but they don't! So done with buying! I have 45 packs installed; EP14, GP11, SP16, Kits4, and this is more than enough for me and this old game engine. Last pack I got was Werewolves and Life & Death. Not wasting any more money on it. The only way to "improve performance" is not to buy each and everything.

I disliked the introduction of kits from the start. All the changes and cutbacks in other packs are unacceptable. That's why I don't buy kits. And I'm glad that I waited for Simmers reviews on "For Rent" and Lovestruck". Saved me lots of bugs and money. And I care less for fairies.
Since EA don't give a poop about old Simmers like me (playing since 2004), I don't give a poop about their low strategies.

  • Yeah, I have reached a point where I am prioritizing stability over new features. I don't want to lose my old save and I can't keep disabling packs, and use mods or toggles to balance the game. This was one of the reasons why I never bought Enchanted by Nature.
