If you're able and willing to use mods, Scumbumbo's packing crates will do this. (I so feel you on this and was SO EXCITED to find that mod!)
@Trecie Hi! Thanks for sharing this. I would love to see an option to add existing items to the new household. I actually just tried something in my game that worked out, though it was a bit tedious. Plus your household would need funds to cover both the new and original lots, so I don't know if it will work for you. Here's what I did.
1 - In build mode add all items you want to keep for the new lot in household inventory.
2 - Move the entire household to the new lot and sell furnishings (this keeps everything in place that isn't in inventory)
3 - Place all the items you put in inventory into the new lot
4 - Split the family and move whatever sims you want back to the original lot
I know, it's not ideal but perhaps a possible workaround? Good luck and have fun playing! :-)

please add. hate saving furniture for my kids moving out, that they can't take.
I usually just give them the cash instead to cover the cost of the items because it frustrates me they can't pack their stuff to take with them (on console). So if it's items I already own, sell them and when splitting the household just transfer enough funds with the Sim who is moving out so they can buy their own.
Many of my Households start out as a big family in one house and then I split them out into separate households with a pot of cash to furnish their new home. Sometimes it's a young adult starting out or sometimes they are heading to Uni.
"Scumbumbo's packing crates"
Isn't that just like normal storage ?You can transfer stuff from your sims inventory to the crate, not from the household inventory, which is the whole point. Things in your sims inventory you can already take with you. What we need is a way to take things from the household inventory. Like my teen's highschool diploma, she should be able to keep it, not have it locked away at her parents place.
- @Naemi_Han No, this particular mod allows you to put furniture/furnishings like beds and couches into the crate. And then the crate into your Sim's inventory.
I see, so only things you can buy again. Not things like the highschool diploma (which doesn't have the option "pack into crate" that furniture now has). I guess it's usefull to save time, but it doesn't solve my issue.
BTW for those trying this mod : you have to place the crate, then click "enable packing" on the crate, then you can click on furniture and "pack into crate". Or else it won't work.
- @Naemi_Han Good to know - I don't have HSY and hadn't tried a diploma. I mainly used it for things like their bed, maybe party or career reward items that the household had spares of, inheriting the bassinet for when they start their own family, etc.

Yeah. I use the heck out of the crates for career rewards. My Sims tend to graduate University, move back in with their parents because they can't afford an apartment until they get a job, and then they get a job with their shiny new degree and get a bunch of career rewards that end up in Mom and Dad's household inventory. I mean. I could move them onto an empty lot and have them get a job, I could have Mom and Dad give them money for a house or apartment, but... you know.
I use both Scumbumbo's Packing Crates and SimRealist's SNB Bank so they can save up for an apartment.
Without the mod, they have the right to buy the item again. Hmf. Then I have to remember what it's called (artist's taboret is one I always forget). Yes, there's an unocked toggle on buildbuy, but I always forget it's there and flail around. Also, it just doesn't feel the same.
What about the Hero of Strangerville and their Motherplant Tendril? That's not a buyable item, and they can't take it with them without the crates!
- @Naemi_Han I realize this an old post, but I’m wondering if the parent couldn’t put it in their inventory and gift the diploma to them.
