Tutorial obsession

Hi,

I don't know why Maxis does this :

  • Lessons
  • Guidance system
  • Help Center
  • Discovery Quest
  • Tutorial aspirations
  • Tutorial Quest NPC (Trashley)

How many systems does the game need ?

  • I'm guessing for newcomers who know absolutely nothing about the game. Though a fairly intuitive game, there are people who still need help because they learn things differently. There often usually are demo modes in most games. (Hi, Newbie family!)

When I first played the Sims I entered it completely blind because there was no demo mode and I had no instruction manual. I did well figuring out CAS, I had no problem moving my Sim into a starter home and seeing the funds I had left, it wasn't hard for me to figure out my Sim needed a job. I got them a job that suited their aspiration and followed what it told me to do in order to progress.

Unfortunately I did not know anything about build/buy (or that items actually has ratings in how well they performed) nor just how powerful the reward store was - I thought they were all temporary like the potions. I also knew nothing about cheats other than "rosebud" but I had no idea you could use it more than once. I had no idea I could change how fast aging was or that I could even turn it off completely. So, my experience was very... boring as heck. It felt so much like real life in terms of just making through the day that I found no enjoyment whatsoever playing. My Sim had barely any time to socialize and basically worked all their life until they died old and alone in the exact same starter home they bought as a young adult, but with plenty of money. Grim came along and I get the message, "Game Over".

I just sat there absolutely bewildered. I played an entire save and that was the game? Hold on a minute! This game is freaking popular. My brother consumes it. I'm obviously missing something here. I hit the web, used the search engine and found "Carl's Guide". I was so beautifully enlightened after that, that my second save was so much more fulfilling and enjoyable... and I freaking learned how the heck to get a birthday cake finally!

So, yeah... instruction manuals, demo modes... those are wonderful to have when you are first starting out in a game. The Sims 4 unfortunately just didn't implement those things the same way previous ones did. A nice demo mode like in Sims 2 and maybe a link to the website that gives instructions would have worked nicely.
