@simsplayer818 , yes, I have never known the Coolala Defender light to fail at getting rid of monsters, so something is clearly wrong! (The owl nightlight will do nothing to prevent monsters , but it can give a nice moodlet upon waking up.)
I tested the Stary Night and the Regular 'ol Nightlights and they both seemed to work . I waited until my Sim got the monster and then placed one of the lights and it went away, and then did this again with the other nightlight the next time she had the monster.
I don't know about Auto Lights, because just like @SheriGR , I always play with the lights on because I want to see what I click on! ๐ณ๐ I think testing without Autolights is a good idea... it can't hurt, and if you discover that this is what is causing your problem, then you can make a new Bug Report !
Also, the more tired, stressed, or needs-depleted your child Sim is, the more likely they will get a nightmare, just like in real life! ๐คจ I had to purposely get the child's needs depleted (especially make them really tired) to get the monster to show up! ๐
Are you on a console (I'm on a PC, so maybe consoles are getting a bug that I'm not aware of), or maybe you play with Custom Content (CC) or Mods? These are 2 factors that might also be contributing or causing the problem that we didn't discuss yet. (But I figure you have been around here for long enough to have considered that, but just in case I will mention it! ๐ )
Please update us on your findings! ๐
We're having massive build issues on console right now, when I say massive I mean we're all struggling to play since they've redesigned our controls to make the controller into a mouse basically so it's going to slow down my adding my families back ๐ญ. I love my family builds too. I add the wall nightlights as part of the decor, with fairy lights too kind of mixed in. Those lights stay on for ambiance so the room twinkles at night. I really love the little 4 poster single beds from Seasons and with the fairy lights and nightlights it makes a lovely kids room. But then... monster under the bed, child won't sleep. So after a few nights of "aaargh!" I swap in a double bed so the poor little mite can get some rest.

@simsplayer818 I know what you mean! I remember years ago that I had a home where dad had several times when, while testing his rocket at night (in the back yard, right behind the bedroom) to complete space-related career goals, he crashed-landed and it really messed with the kids!
@jordyou23 , @PipMenace, and @gooochyeee... Not sure if any of this will be of any additional use, but if memory serves I think something I've tried when having a 'waking up' and sleep-deprived crazed Sim (several things can/have caused this over the years) is... (Be prepared to use the 'pause button liberally for most of these...)
- Command the Sim to nap repeatedly until their sleep bar is well into the green (so they aren't overly tired - as @PugLove888 mentioned). Naps don't get interrupted by nightmares and other things like sleep does.
- In one situation I queued up sleep commands over and over (and over and over!) until the Sim got enough sleep to be well into the green on that need (they were so worked up I was worried to leave the lot!).
- In any kids room, add the old stand-by 'Coolala Defender light' next to every child's bed (not just across the room), and if you have more than one bed in the room, add one by each bed.
- Make sure all needs are well into the green (also, as @PugLove888 mentioned)... and that all of the needs that will decay while they sleep are high enough that they won't go red while sleeping (just this time - while trying to 'fix' them).
- Make sure there is not some secondary thing that's waking them (music, wind chimes, another child with nightmares, a pet, etc).
- You can also try the 'make happy' cheat, or reset the Sim (or better yet, go ahead and do both!). (Click here for directions on this, if needed.)
Then, once you get everything all set up for them to be green and put in bed, etc.... go ahead and save and exit the game. Then re-enter the game and the household with the child and see if things are going normally for their sleeping. (Alternatively, when re-enter the game, you could play another household for a Sim day or two so that time can pass while they're in their right mind in the other lot. If you go it that way maybe you could make a backup save of the game on your desktop before you re-entered your game.)

@simsplayer818 , yes I have heard about the problems console users are having with the latest patch!๐ญ I hope it is fixed soon! But it sounds as if your problem with the nightlights not working to prevent monsters existed before this latest patch. Is it just that one household in your save file that this happens to, or do any of your other Sims kids have this problem. That would suggest the problem is only with that lot. However, You could have a corrupted file, perhaps. ๐ค I know console players have only a few save slots, but can you check another save file (or create a new one) to see if the problem with the Coolala Defender light exists in those save files as well?
Your use of fairylights in the kids rooms sounds lovely! - simsplayer8183 years agoHero@PugLove888 It's happended for as long as I've been playing as far as I can remember. On 2 different consoles and I think I've had maybe 4 or 5 completely new games. But it's funny you should mention lots. Because now you say that, it's worse in Windenburg. And I usually place families back in the same lot and rebuild their home there again. So little Andre Lefarge, he's worst affected and his family live on the island in Windenburg. I have a luxury development on that island and his family have the second biggest lot. I have a family that adopted a house full of kids on the Windenburg mainland on a large lot and they are badly affected too.
I do have bugged lots in each save so I wonder if that's what this is. So that's another thing to test. I think I've just about figured out the new controls now, although it's very problematic. So I might still be on schedule to add my family builds. It took some figuring out, plus it's quite painful to build now. The way they've changed it isn't at all kind to RSI or dexterity problems. I nearly posted a photo of my hand on the feedback thread as its all crumpled up! That's just off renovating a duplex apartment 2 days ago. Some people are just posting that they are in tears or want a refund. So I'm sure it will be looked at again. It's bad timing when I'm rebuilding my game and because I have favourite Sims and families, I'm rushing to add them back again. I hate looking at manage worlds and seeing only 10 households and no little ones yet. - gooochyeee3 years agoSeasoned Ace@PugLove888 In my testing both the wall things form parenthood work. The werewolf one works, and the base game one works. Bathroom Clutter doesn't work. And as a little bonus the bunk bed Top doesn't get monsters, but the bottom one does. And when the bottom one does the top bunk sim also wakes up. ( I used the dream home decorator one)
Hope this helps, - SheriGR3 years agoHero
@simsplayer818 I'm so sorry about the difficulties you're having building on console! That sounds awful! I love to build, but if console BB is that hard to use I must admit, I think the only building I would be doing is small renovations to default homes and I would download the rest from the gallery. Ugg! Again, so sorry! โน๏ธ
- simsplayer8183 years agoHero@SheriGR Thanks, hopefully they'll fix it soon.

@simsplayer818 , interesting that you have had this problem on 2 different consoles!๐ฎ Perhaps it is a console only issue? I couldn't find anything about it in the Bug Report Forum, but maybe I was looking in the wrong category. ๐ค I wish I knew more about the game on consoles.
I'm very sorry about your problems with the new controls for B&B Mode on console! ๐ซ๐ญ It is especially frustrating because these kinds of changes were done to help people play the game better. And it isn't just annoying but actually causing you physical pain!๐ I hope they solve this problem. ๐ And if you don't mind my asking, what is RSI? ๐ค (I keep thinking Rheumatoid Arthritis, but that abbreviation is RA. ( But if you don't want to answer, don't worry about it! ๐ฅฐ
I do not have any pain in my hands, but I always had dexterity problems, so I can imagine how difficult these new changes would be!
Good luck on your renovations! ๐
@gooochyeee , thank you for the feedback on the nightlights!๐ I tested in my game as well, and both Parenthood wall nightlights worked (but the toy one does not work) as well! I did not test the Werewolf one , so thank you for doing that! ๐ I wouldn't expect the Bathroom Clutter kit one to work for 2 reasons: 1) kits do not have any gameplay elements (except for Bust the Dust for obvious reasons) so this would be for decorative purposes only, and 2) being that it was a clutter kit designed specifically for the bathroom, and people usually don't sleep in their bathrooms๐, they wouldn't think to add bedroom functionality to this item, even though as a player it would make sense if we were to move the bathroom nightlight to the bedroom . ๐
As for the bunk beds, I can see how the top bunk wouldn't have the monster animation, so I guess just having the bottom bunk have the monster animation , but it also waking up the top bunk occupant is a nice compromise for the bunk bed! Thank you for your research! ๐ฅฐ - simsplayer8183 years agoHero@PugLove888 Hello there, I've now started on rebuilding my family lots (they are in the gallery under TensiveBoar1730 ๐ finally summoned the nerve to add them despite my Xbox choosing a daft name for me) I've had 2 little Sims testing the night lights and the Starry night night light is the problem and it's the one I use the most. Linus tested it and got a nasty shock while the others worked for him in my Magnolia Cottage. Andre is now testing them back in the lighthouse lot again (my The New Lighthouse) in Windenburg. I think the problem has been that I always have the Starry night one included in the mix and it has somehow cancelled the effect of any others. I often have the Night Owl or Regular ol night light with it. But I tested those and they work on their own, but not with the Starry night one. But I haven't tested that theory on Andre yet, he has the Regular ol night light now and no monsters. He has his hamster in his room to face those monsters with him if they return!
RSI is Repetitive Strain Injury as we call it in the UK. It's pain in hands and wrists and it's caused by my years of working with PCs and gaming. Some people seem more vulnerable to it than others and I actually started after only about 5 years of daily PC use, my wrists are always puffy on the joints and an elderly former colleague noticed it one day and gave me this eerie warning "you're going to need wrist braces pet", yikers I thought to myself! Now I get "the claw" and my hand doesn't go flat anymore. I've unfortunately had to make an accessibility complaint this week about the new controls. I hated doing it because I love the Sims ๐ฃ and I'm sure it wasn't anyone's intention.
So I'm building carefully and taking regular breaks. But I just love building and since the crashing has stopped I'm so happy I can play my game again. - PugLove8883 years agoHero (Retired)
@simsplayer818 , thank you for informing me on what RSI stands for. I'm not sure, but I think that is the same thing we call Carpel Tunnel Syndrome in the U.S. ๐ค If it isn't the same, it does sound a lot alike. That must be terrible for you! ๐ญ I hope they can either change the console controls back, or else have a toggle for those that need the old way of playing! Playing the Sims is important for many people's mental health, so it shouldn't contribute negatively to anyone's physical health! ๐
I"m a bit confused. I must be misunderstanding something. You stated "I think the problem has been that I always have the Starry night one included in the mix and it has somehow cancelled the effect of any others. I often have the Night Owl or Regular ol night light with it. But I tested those and they work on their own, but not with the Starry night one."I understand that your Starry night nightlight isn't working as it should to keep the monsters at bay, but when you mention the Owl night light, do you mean the little egg-shaped owl nightlight that doubles as a toy that came with Parenthood? You said it is working, but that one isn't one of the nightlights that is supposed to keep monsters away! I don't know of anyone who has had it work before. I know you aren't using a Mod since you are on a console! ๐ Did they fix it to work and nobody knew of it?๐ฎ๐ค I'm really confused! ๐คช
I'm very happy your game isn't crashing anymore!!! ๐ฅณ - simsplayer8183 years agoHero@PugLove888 ah I get it now, I mistakenly thought the little owl was on the list of protective night lights.
When Linus had monsters with the Starry night light and the little owl together, I took the starry one down and left the little owl. The monsters stopped. So I left him with just the owl, no monsters after that. Then I left Magnolia Cottage and moved to a different family. So it must just be coincidence that the monsters stopped. The lot is in the Gallery with the owl as the only night light now, oops!
I'm adding another child Sim today so I'll see what happens with this one. - PugLove8883 years agoHero (Retired)
@simsplayer818 , lol I understand! There are a lot of items in this game and it often gets confusing! The owl does give a nice happy buff, but it doesn't keep the monsters away! It must have been a coincidence! ๐
I have no idea what is up with your Starry Night nightlight! ๐ฎ๐ That one should work!!! The Starry Night , the Regular 'ol Nightlight, and the Coolalala Defender are the only ones I know of that I also recently tested. And you said that the one from the Werewolves GP also works (I haven't tested it yet, but I will assume it works based on your info! ๐ )
I believe you said that you have tried the Starry Night one on multiple lots. I can't remember, but did you try it on multiple saves as well?๐ค ๐ค (I'm sorry if you already answered that earlier). I was hoping that this problem was only in the one save. ๐ค - simsplayer8183 years agoHero
@PugLove888I so far just have the one brand new game I'm rebuilding with a backup save and it's definitely not working on this one. But in my previous saves (that I lost due to error codes or crashing) I had monsters with it as well, it's my favourite one to use and seems to be the common factor. This new Sim I'm bringing back today has a little bedroom ready for her arrival from the children's home (๐ญ) so I'll test it again on this lot which is the Narwhal Arms converted into a quirky bungalow.
Edit: I thought I'd posted the image of poor little Linus freaking out but I hadn't so I'm attaching it now, bless him. This is from a couple of weeks ago. I don't have the Werewolves pack so I couldn't say about the light from that pack. Testing again on my current household has the other nightlights working but not the Starry one. So I think I've confirmed that in my game now. Thank you for helping me figure it out! My little Sims thank you too lol (they're not so happy with me for the experiments though lol).
- PugLove8883 years agoHero (Retired)
@simsplayer818 It still bothers me that the Stary NIghtlight isn't working in your game ! ๐ค ๐ง๐คทโโ๏ธ๐ญ But at least I was able to help you somewhat, even if it took a while! If you ever find out what the deal is with your Starry Nightlight, please update us! And I hope all your little Sims (and their parents!) have a blissful night's sleep! ๐ฅฐ

Are any of the nightlights supposed to prevent toddler nightmares? Because I could have sworn they used to, but even the base game Defender nightlight doesn't seem to anymore for me. Though there could be something else going on with my save, because I've twice now reopened my game to find the Defender light has turned into the basic non-monster-preventing base game night light, and had to swap it back again. Odd little bug. None of the rest of my build gets dropped and nothing seems to have been lost in game play... just the one object getting switched out occasionally. I've been trying to figure out if there's any way I could be doing it myself accidentally, but even if I had grabbed the wrong one originally how would it come back again after I fixed it?
- SheriGR3 years agoHero
@PipMenace I haven't raised any toddlers recently (but that's going to change with the baby update!), but last I knew toddlers don't get nightmares - only children. And I never remember a nightlight autonomously changing to another item for me. However, items are sometimes switched out for something the game sees as a 'logical substitute' if you place something that had items you don't own in your game (such as from a pack you don't own). But it doesn't sound like this is applicable in your case. Do you have a Mod that changes toddler or similar dynamics that could be interfering and causing the toddler nightmares?
- PipMenace3 years agoHero@SheriGR It's a no-mods save, and since it's swapping one base game item for another I doubt it's caused by somehow forgetting that I own something. For now I'll just accept that as a bugged save unless I see it again in others. It's still playable, just weird.
What does happen consistently in all my saves, however, is my toddlers waking up with nightmares almost every night. Sometimes multiple times each night, even with a night light present. I swear the night light used to prevent them... - SheriGR3 years agoHero
@PipMenace Silly me... I was associating what you're talking about with monsters (the 'Coolala, the Defender Wall Light' - and certain other night lights works for that, but only children get the monster scare). I guess I never noticed that they can wake up scared. I just asked a friend about it and she said she usually avoids this by reading the toddler to sleep. (Thanks, @MapleSimmer ) I do have my Sims read them to bed usually, though, so maybe that's why I never noticed this?
Just a thought... Sims will wake up to tv, music, chimes, etc, and sometimes pets will wake them. I doubt that's what you're mentioning, though.
You may want to make sure the toddler's needs are as full as possible when they go to sleep, too.
- mightyspritesims3 years agoLegend
@PipMenace. Toddler nightmares can be prevented by raising one of the skills. I think it's the Thinking skill. You'll see a notification about sleeping better through the night.
