All conversations default to Awkward Encounter

It sounds like your sim or the sims you are talking to have a fear, there is a fear that causes all conversations to be awkward, I think it's called fear of being judged. You need to overcome it (by figuring out differences with other sims), or using a fear-be-gone potion or turning wants and fears off in the settings.
