Always have a hard time placing stairs for front door!

So I don't know why but I always have a hard time placing stairs for the front door outside! I seem to be only able to place them if they are facing to the sides! I can never place them just facing forward. What am I doing wrong? I've tried both making the foundation first then not having one, and even with the door first and even without a door and still can't figure this out ☹️
