I had this same problem too. I don't play with mods, so I know that wasn't an issue. I tried repairing the game, tried to delete localthumbcache.package, tried to leave the lot and come back, all the generic troubleshooting and nothing was working. But! I COULD put the chick in my household inventory so I did that, then I left the lot and came back. When I came back, I placed the chick from the household inventory and suddenly I could name it again. I don't know if that's a working fix or if I just got lucky, but figured I'd offer just in case. I didn't see anyone else posting about this issue.
I am having this problem too after moving lots. I tried placing the chicken in inventory and reloading but it still isn't "owned" by anyone. So frustrating!
