Cat litter box saying put in inventory

Product: The Sims 4
Platform:Steam-PC
Which language are you playing the game in? English
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
What is your current game version number? 1.72.28.1030
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? cats and dogs, city living, island living, get together, get to work, holiday pack.
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? i've tried every litter box, they all say "put in inventory"
What happens when the bug occurs? the cat is unable to use it
What do you expect to see? a useless litter box
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Yes
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? Yes
Please describe the patch or change you made. i removed all of my custom content and mods, i repaired and attempted to update the game and i also tried different households to see if that would work, it did not.

This was a bug in 2017 but i cant find anything on it recently. All of the litter boxes in the game are broken it seems, when i click on them it just says "put in inventory" and my cats are unable to use them. what should i do?

  • @DrPxpper Moving this to tech for further troubleshooting but that's really all the interactions there are if it's not dirty.

Do the cats complain they can't get there ?

@keiraskyler Most litter boxes in the game are portable-- I suppose for when your Sims go on vacation and want to take their cat with them. When they are clean, the only option you normally see when you click on it is "Put in Inventory". As far as I can remember, this is how it's always looked in my game. If it's dirty and requires cleaning, then you'll see more options.

If your cat is not able to use the litter box: Make sure that wherever you place it, the side with the green arrow (when viewed in Build Mode) is not blocked or facing a wall.

Occasionally, Sim cats can be stubborn about finding the litter box even when it's not blocked, especially if it's upstairs. If this happens, try picking your cat up and placing them on the floor near the litter box. They'll usually find it just fine without having to show them, so you shouldn't have to do this very often.

Good luck, I hope this helps :D

I will note that for me, 90% of the time if the litter box is not on the main floor of the house I’ll have to have my Sim carry the cat up or downstairs to show them the litter box about once every day or two. I think it’s a function of the detection range… if they’re not likely to wander by it on accident at some point, they don’t know it’s there.
