Cats and Dogs pack severe-constant bugs

Product: The Sims 4

Platform: PC

Which language are you playing the game in? English

How often does the bug occur? Frequently, anywhere between 5 minutes to 1-2 hours of gameplay.

What is your current game version number? 1.111.102.1030 DX11

What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed?

Horse Ranch, Vampires, Snowy Escape, Realm of Magic, Lovestruck, Island Living, Goth Galore, Get Together, Get to Work, Get Famous, Discover University, Cats and Dogs.

Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves?
Step 1.) Create Save file with 40 played sims/households.
Step 2.) Have multiple Sims with maxed out all skills, and a vast majority of Aspirations completed, as well as excessive inventory items.
Step 3.) Have any pets with a house full of items, and tight corners/small rooms near doorways, also with decks having stairways.
Step 4.) Perform actions on pets such as "Feel the love" and "Go for a walk" and "Send Prowling/Hunting."
Step 5.) Watch pets become "stuck" unable to move, and then become "Uncomfortable" due to being unable to move for long periods.
(Note: While going on walks, the dogs start walking in areas of the map they shouldn't be able to walk, and the walk never ends. Both the sim walking the dog, and the dog itself become severely broken.)

What happens when the bug occurs? Pets become "stuck" and unable to move. Pets clip through terrain and "fall" under the ground.

What do you expect to see? Pets to behave normally, such as being able to move, and not traverse off the maps.

Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? I did, but they have since been removed..

Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? Yes, after installing Cats and Dogs.

Please describe the patch or change you made. I downloaded Cats and Dogs expansion pack.

I have also included the most recent bug I experienced after about 5-10 minutes of gameplay after doing all of the following:

  • Make a backup of  theSims4 folder in Documents\ElectronicArts to an external drive or a different place on your harddrive (or to a flash/external drive). This is only a backup if anything goes wrong. You won't need this folder for the further steps.
  • Rename your theSims4 folder in Documents\ElectronicArts to Sims4_Backup
  • Start the game (All your save games will be gone, your options will be reset to factory settings and all your custom content will be gone. Not to worry, it's all still there in that backup folder). You will also temporarily loose your event rewards. Those are saved in the file usersettings.ini.
  • A new Sims 4 folder will have been recreated in your documents\electronicArts folder. Some folders might be missing for they are only created when you need them.
  • You will need to start a new game for your old saves are still gone
  • See if your error is gone.

The Error is gone now

  • Starting putting the folders back, starting with your saves. Check your game after every folder.
  • The Tray folder contains all your downloaded houses and Sims that show in your library.
  • AccountDataDB.package file contains the unlocked event rewards. Make sure to copy that back.
  • Only put stuff back from your mods folder that is verified to still work.
  • ALL custom content can potentially cause problems. If you found out which folder is causing problems, put your stuff back in groups or one by one until you find the guilty party.
  • Not all folders need putting back. See this for what folder does what: User files explained

Same Error still exists

Keeping your Computer updated

  • Out-dated graphic and sound drivers, missing Windows Service Packs and other components that are not up-to-date can cause problems with your game. Make sure you you update those regularly.
  • Computer maintenance is important. Defrag your Computer, clean your Registry and get rid of temporary files on a regular basis. Also clean the ventilators from time to time and if you have a desktop open it up and clean it inside.
  • Backup your important files. That goes for your music, your photos as well as your Sims User Files. You'll find the user files in Documents\ElectronicArts. Copy the whole folder to an external drive.
  • Use the cheat resetsim <firstname> <lastname> to reset a particular Sim in your town. You won't loose any progress, all it does is put the Sim to a safe location from where he can start acting again
  • Restart the game or the computer
  • Go traveling
  • Go to Manage world and move your Sim out of his home and then back into the same one. If you have money troubles, use the cheat freerealestate.
  • Load a backup game.
  • Start a new game to see if the error is only happening in the current save game. Make sure to completely close down your game before starting a different game. Not just go to the main menu.
  • Start the game in windowed mode

(Note: I have performed all of the above that is applicable. Using "reset sim" did not fix the cat. After using the cheat code, the simply popped back up on the surface level, but still was unable to move. I had to force use the pet command to "call pet" the little whistle icon on the pets household picture.)

I have seen frequent and ongoing issues with pets ever since installing Cats and Dogs. Both cats and dogs, especially while at the Vet Clinic, appear extremely broken, running against walls, becoming stuck, having to cancel and reapply actions and many other issues and glitches with both cats and dogs.

This is not a solution to my issue, but I am trying something to rule out "mods" and "custom content" as being a potential cause.

I backed up my files to a USB drive, I then up loaded every single household, and house to the gallery, then deleted my The Sims 4 File.

In doing this I lost all my "relationships" and simoleons, but both of these are okay.

I was able to "save" my inventory, for one of my sims by placing 1 of each item onto a lot, then saving the lot to the gallery. It made me lose the drink/potions, but that will also be easy to replace.

Once I finish redownloading each family, and collecting back my simoleons, I will attempt to have pets again. If they are still bugged I will end up changing this to a bug report, and hopefully then I might receive a response, and no longer have to stress over this issue. If this ends up resolving the issue, then that would be even better. We shall see.

I would like to add, that in doing this, the method provided by The Sims team does not include a mention of saving screenshots.

In fact the method explicitly says "You won't need this folder for the further steps." when in reality, if the player wishes to retain their screenshots, they must keep that folder.

Due to a lack of proper guidance within the complex processes to help EA determine bugs, and have them addressed players, including myself are losing all their screenshots.

I also would like to add, the bug still isn't fixed. Cats continuously get "stuck" and constantly reloading the game is the only temporary fix.

It is much easier just to not play with cats and dogs, even after having completely removed all mods and custom content from my game files.

One example, and extremely easy to test, is create a vampire, acquire "Always use bat form" and then try to "clean up" any dishes that are not right next to a sink. For example, have a glass of milk, place it on a table in a dinning room, with no sink nearby except maybe even on a different floor, and the vampire cannot clean up without turning off "Always use as bat"

This is a completely broken feature.

What is interesting is the vampire can still "clean up" while using mist form.

There are countless examples of completely broken features in the Sims 4 like this, and it is peculiar that somehow the Sims 4 team is unable or unwilling to address them. They have nothing to do with mods, or custom content, as a brand new game on any computer can replicate these broken features. Especially the one mentioned above, with a Vampire "always use bat" form selected, being unable to "clean up" dishes.

My cats & dogs don’t get stuck that often, but when they do (more likely with strays than household pets) I just right click on and reset the pet, not the sim (need testingcheats on). I’ve never had one stay stuck after that, but then I don’t usually have a lot of crowded/maxed lots and households in one save, so you may be right about hitting a max save file size for your computer.

To be clear, are you still getting this error after playing a while in a vanilla save, or is it only when in a modded one?

    I have numerous bugs.

They are 100% related to the game, and not mods.

I included a very easy to test bug in my comment.

Play as a vampire, select "always use bat form" then place a dirty dish away from any sink or dishwasher. Have the Vampire "clean up" the dish, and they will not do it. They pick it up and then put it down.

You admit, that there is a regular bug with cats and dogs getting stuck.

Add that to the massive array of other bugs in the game, and it makes for a frustrating experience.

The thing is, the more packs you buy, the more lots you have, the more sims you create, the more townies the game creates, and everything else, the "more" in general there is, the game starts to really become unplayable.

I think that is why EA doesn't bother fixing bugs. They encourage buying packs, and starting new files, then just blame mods for the issues.

So again, to be clear. No mods. (Again you can try the very easy to replicate vampire "clean up" bug on a brand new fresh file with no mods, so you know its EA/bugs and not any thing else.)

Add to the above a large file, with a ton of packs, a lot of items, even without mods, it will start to become unplayable.

  • This needs to be in the bugs report and not under gameplay and issues.  Let me see if I can help you get on the right track here.  I am only a player, I don't create/use cc or mod's.  I would start here: The Sims Helpers Blog | EA Forums

There is a lot of info that may help you; in the top box  of that page you will find 3 links. Those will help you locate the posts that have reported already concerning cat and dogs.    [READ FIRST] Compiled list of reported Issues | EA Forums - 5052943    is my favorite place to start as it It is so much easier to find or see if something has been reported already that can simply be upvoted on.  crinrict is a volunteer as is everyone on this site is, to my understanding and has been doing an awesomely and outstanding job on helping so many players resolve issues.

Thanks, but the guide to repairing the game, and such needs to be updated.

He says you can get rid of your old The Sims 4 folder excluding the saves, but in doing that, you delete all your screen shots, as well as any data retaining to event rewards.

I personally lost all my screenshots trying to "fix" this bug. The bugs in this game are too common, it is easier to play without a feature than to try to wait for a fix.

The game is 11 years old, and bugs have persisted the entire time, with new ones being introduced with each new pack. They have only possibly addressed 150~ so far, which is not a good number in my opinion.

Again, I have just chosen not to play with pets in my save files.
