hair only growing when sims are sleeping?

I noticed that my sims body hair is only growing when they are sleeping. I'm playing vampire sims at the moment and they rarely sleep (duh). I kind of like the hair growth feature, so I'm not sure if this is intentional (because y'know they're vampires and/or it should only happen if they actually sleep) or if it's a bug?
