Is there a way to get out of this event completely? It is buggy and I really do not want to participate. It is interfering with my gameplay.

I haven't found a mod that specifically blocks, disabled or turns off the event. But, and since EA only cares about the majority (socialism at its finest), here is a list of mods that "interfere/block" some of the event in a way that may make it more tolerable to some. Me not really, but give them a go I guess and see if it helps.

Note: The mods listed have issues that break the event, so using these to possibly avoid the event is not what the intention was from their creaters. Use at own risk.
Cheers,

Greetings - I have no desire to play this event and it is, indeed, interfering with my gameplay. Hopefully the next time EA/MAXIS decides to do something soo intrusive and unwanted, they will allow gamers to opt out.

I agree with everyone here, Sims fans who have spent lots of money on this game are being disrespected with this update. We ought to be able to opt out of this because having so much of the screen covered makes the game downright unplayable. I will not be playing until I am notified of a fix for this because I cannot stand having that much of my screen covered. That is why I always delete holidays in my saves. Program in an x-out button, I'm playing with a corny little family right now, I don't wanna mess around with dark grim reaper stuff.
