Maybe you should turn off automatic updates in Origin > Application Settings > Application > Client Update so you choose whether to update your game or not.

That doesn't work. It still FORCES me to install the update or won't let me play the game. NOW it's deleted an entire BASE GAME TOWN.

Set your origin to offline mode and you can play without updating. How exactly has updating deleted a whole town?
The won't stop eating bug is supposed to be fixed. Do you have any mods? Perhaps they're conflicting.

And then you can't start the game without updating it. There's no option to say "I don't want to update at this time." Going offline only works if you keep your game ready to play rather than exiting it.
This is not a problem for me because I tend to update each time. But I can see how it might be annoying to those who don't like the updates since the updates often change things that people don't want changed.
