Perhaps try building up a new sim that you are just an acquaintance with to a friend level, then try asking them. Even though the sim that your sim is a soulmate is saying the same response as the other sims, perhaps building up a friendship with a new sim may help.
I have also read a suggestion by a simmer that was helping another simmer who had the same issue, that asking a civilian may help.
