@foreignmystery    Hi!  You can check your sims' food preferences by clicking the Simology Panel and checking their traits.  As @luthienrising mentioned, if your sim is vegetarian and there is no vegetarian dish stored in the fridge, then the sim will not be able to get leftovers.  The same is true for sims with the lactose intolerant trait.

What's funny is, if I'd kept both dishes in the fridge, then both sims could get leftovers since the turkey dinner is lactose free and mac and cheese is vegetarian-safe.  :-)
