Sim won’t throw away the trash

Update:

I just tried to throw out a can of food and this time she took it outside and threw it in that trash can.

i was able to use the square button on the controller to throw the trash pile in the inside can and that works but nothing happens when I click on the trash can, it doesn’t even light up when my cursor goes on it. It’s not full so I don’t get why it only works if I drag trash into it and I can’t even select the can. Like I said, I tried buying a new one and relocating it but still nothing. 10 minutes ago I could click on the can but when I replaced it, how I can’t

I've seen some of my outdoor trashcans get bugged when someone kicks them over. My Sim will set them back upright but will insist they can no longer use it to take trash out and will instead just throw things on the ground next to it. If I tell them to throw that away, they carry it inside to throw it out indoors, then try to take out the trash, encounter the bugged can, and throw it on the ground again. The only remedy is to delete the old trashcan and buy a new one.

I've never seen that happen with an indoor can, but it sounds like some "stuck" action is blocking/bugging the trash can, can you travel to another lot and come back and see if reloading the lot helps?

See it’s weird because at first it wouldn’t work but I could still click on the can. Like you know when you put your cursor over something, it highlights before you select it? Well it doesn’t even do that, it’s like it’s a clutter object that has no use. I try clicking and it doesn’t light up, nor does any options pop up. Nothing happens. I replaced it several times and relocated it. The outdoor trash was the same but I replaced that and then when I got my sims to throw up a plate of food, she took it outside and tossed it. But still my can inside won’t work and it’s the electronic one. The only time it works is if I live drag the food into the can, then it works and started lighting up or whatever showing it’s destroying what you put into it or whatever but then once again, I can’t click on. Nothing happens. I tried restarting the entire system and it didn’t work. Tried going to another neighbourhood and same thing. I just restarted my system again. Keep in mind that I didn’t buy it from the store, I bought the physical game disk. I could try repairing the game but idk how to do that haha

@nickbeast911 This problem can have multiple causes. Since you're in the mod/CC issues forum, let's rule those out. Drag the Mods folder to the desktop, delete the file called localthumbcache, open the game to test, and exit without saving.

I know this post is two years old but I also know that this is still an issue, and it's the first page that shows up in search which means people are still reading it. I figured something out on my end this evening and I don't know how it just came to me. I have a vampire that zooms around as a bat automatically. I very time I try to clean something up, a diaper, a dish, garbage etc, I'd pick it up and then put it back down again. This has never been an issue for me until now... with this character. I don't use any mods. I decided to try disabling the always run as bat feature and viola! I haven't had the issue since. So... if you have a character that has the ability to zoom around automatically, you're probably having this issue. Weird that you can zoom around with littles but not with trash lol. I hope this helps anyone who is struggling! If you don't have a vampire or a character that can zoom, I wish you luck ☹️
