Sims Blocking Refrigerator

I've noticed an uptick in this lately, although it seems more likely in some houses than others. Perhaps the table is placed too far away?  (In this house, there are barstools and a kitchen island two build squares away, so SOMETIMES they'll eat at a designated dining area.)  Maybe it has to do with gallery/Game Changer houses that are very cluttered?  (It happens ALL THE TIME in Henford-on-Bagley and less often in base game Willow Creek houses.)

Sims will choose to eat standing directly in front of the refrigerator, blocking any other Sims from getting food out of the fridge.  This is annoying because I like to have my Sims eat a lot of leftovers (because family meals are impossible if you play with autonomy on).

If I tell them to sit in a chair at the table, about 50% of the time they'll finish their meal in front of the refrigerator, wash their dish, and then go sit at the table without a plate.  If I'm annoyed enough, I'll reset object, causing them to drop the plate, put the plate on the table, and click eat, which leads to the desired eating-at-table behavior.  If I'm less annoyed, I'll drag a dish onto the counter for the rest of the family to eat... assuming this person didn't eat the last serving.  The rest of the family will then stand around stupidly in the kitchen eating rather than eating at the table.

Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy is standing in front of the refrigerator preferable to sitting down at the table like a civilized Sim and eating there?

@xochiquetzl_xkvn Hi!  I definitely feel your pain.  So,  your first mistake was playing with autonomy on. (half joking ;-)  But seriously, I've noticed this mostly on one lot in particular in Windenburg.  I placed an A-frame that I built on that lot.  The only difference that I can think of, between that one and other lots, is that the dining table is further away than the barstools.  Based on your image, I don't know where the dining table is but here is the layout in the A-frame I mentioned.

In this house, when I direct a sim to grab a serving, most of the time they will stand right in front of the fridge.  If they're standing there, no other sims will go, just as you described.  Sometimes, the sim will choose to sit on the barstool furthest to the right, which is technically the closest one to where they're standing in front of the fridge.  Ugh!

So, at some point, I just started grabbing plates of food and dragging them to either the bar or table.  Once the food is closer to the table, the sims will choose to sit there.  Although, in some houses with a square table, I can't put the food in the middle because only two sims will grab food and sit at the table.  For some reason, the plate on a square table takes up too much space?  Sims are weird!  Anyway, hope this helps and good luck!

I have noticed that sometimes the just stand there eating but if I order another sim to grab something they either move out of the way or keep standing there while the other sim uses the fridge.

@jpkarlsen  I'm happy for you that yours will do that, 😉 but mine do not get out of the way.  Instead, every Sim in the house will pathing wave if I ask them to get food out of the fridge while the eating Sim stands there staring at the fridge door.

@Rachelharris31  Sadly, mine do this if there is a dining table, too.  It seems to depend on the house.  They eat at the table at Riverside Roost, but not at 3 Olde Mill Lane.  They eat at the counter at 1 Torendi Tower.  (Apparently the dining table is Just For Homework.)  And alas, at this beautiful gallery house, they WILL NOT use the counter for leftovers, NOR will they use the patio table out back (which is apparently Just For Homework, especially if there's a violent thunderstorm going on, but that's another topic).  All meals must be eaten while staring fixedly at the fridge door.  I'd say it was just a problem with this particular build, but it also happens at newer lots that come with the game.

If you have a sim set the table they will favor this over other seating (standing) and if you use a child for this it builds responsibility.

Note: if you order two sims at the same time to get food from the fridge then you will see the blocked wave when the first sim get his food.

Yes, they pathing wave if I ask them to simultaneously get leftovers, but they also pathing wave if one person is standing in front of the fridge and I tell a second person to get leftovers.  The person eating in front of the fridge does not move.

(I'm familiar with how fridges work;  I used to have several on a different lot.  Did you know that you can only have two people get leftovers simultaneously from two fridges if you specify which particular leftover each person gets?)

I'll try having them set the table.  I'm usually annoyed by table-setting because family meals are impossible, but I'll try it.

@JonaO703  LOL, yes, I have friends who agree that playing with autonomy on is a dire mistake!  :D  (But I find some of the things they choose to do really cute! and then there's things like this, LOL!)

I'm going to mark your answer as a solution, because yeah, if I drag the leftovers to the counter because someone is blocking the fridge like a big dumb goon, they will sometimes.... sit at the counter!

    Smarter Sims my foot.  😉

@xochiquetzl_xkvn Here is a different lot in Glimmerbrook.  It has an eat-in kitchen and a formal dining area.

I currently have a family of four living there.  If I direct sims to grab a serving from the fridge, they always will sit at the square table.  If there is a plate on the counter near the sink, they almost always sit at the table.  If I put it on the bar, two of them will sit at the bar, two will sit at the square table. However, if I put the food on the square table, only two will sit at the table.  Everyone else then moves to the formal dining table. What the ... ?

BTW, I actually tried moving the ladies' plates to the square table and they wouldn't place.  The meal platter is literally too big to accommodate more than two servings on a square table. ???

    @xochiquetzl_xkvn

The issue with not being able to tell two at the same time to get something to eat from the same fridge is because when you order the first one to get something a plate is generated in the fridge. You can see that happening if the fridge has a glass door or if you pause the game and have another sim "open" the fridge to look at contents. There is only room for one so if another orders a plate you get the "I can't do that wave". For that reason I normally have two refrigerators with larger households where the second sim will route to the other one and get a plate from there. This fails if there are no more leftovers to get.
