My sims wife is going down the style influencers career but I am unable to purchase the style impressions board because my sim is in the astronaut tree. Is there a way to go into build mode as a sim other than my original? What can I do for this situation?

Is the wife still part of the active household?
The style board should appear in household inventory when first entering the career.
Once this object is unlocked it will be available in build/buy under activities and skills.

That does make a difference. In that case there is a cheat that works to unlock special career items/rewards.
Just search for "sims 4 cheat unlock career items" to find the cheat.
