Try resetting your sims 4 folder, and testing in a new save game without putting back any of your data in the sims 4 folder and see if the issue remains.

just tried it, didn't work unfortunately :(
it did let me click the exit button this time, but the game froze instead of closing, so i still had to force quit- thank you for the suggestion anyway <3
