My favorite packs for cute/nature rather than weird/adventure would be Cottage Living and Cats & Dogs. Though I do also enjoy Island Living - just not for the mermaids. And with the current not-running-long-distances bug, Island Living's difficult to play.
Favorite mods are Littlbowbub's cookbooks and LittleMsSam's maintenance of Scarlet's Subject Homework. Also any toddler stuff from PandaSama.
And no, you're not going to get stuck in an extended tutorial. There is a new tutorial system but it's more just startup suggestions & you can turn it off. I briefly tried the two app versions and... do those tutorials ever even end? I deleted them because I thought the tutorial style was just the whole game since it seemed never ending.
