I have no idea which section to post this in, my apologies if this is the wrong place - I'm not sure if this is a bug or if I just am doing something wrong. But I can't seem to paint the ceilings abo...
I don't know from your post what you mean by "the ceilings above platform areas". But...
In the back of the image is the Pre-made house. In the foreground are three different types, starting from the right of the image, The area just fenced off, Flat Square without ceiling, Flat Square with ceiling
When the first floor is displayed, it looks like the image below.
In this state, click on "Floor and Ceiling Patterns" in the red circle in the image to display the patterns. Select one of the patterns, and you will see a place to place the pattern, as shown in the next image.
When "Ceiling by Room" is selected, moving the cursor with the pattern selected will display the entire installation area with the pattern. Of course, if the ceiling is not installed, the pattern cannot be placed.
To install a pattern on the ceiling of a room on the second floor, display the second floor and install the pattern.

@gertie47 I've also got gaps above all of my platforms where I can't apply ceiling coverings because as @Pick-a-boo_doo rightly points out there has to actually be a ceiling in place before you can cover it. So I've added images here to show how I've corrected the gaps above the platforms first.
To start with, I've pulled back the roof and then placed fencing around the gaps to fill them in. Then I've removed the fencing and I'm left with a section of concrete instead of a gap. Then I applied ceiling coverage on both sides, upper and lower to match the rest of the house and I've put the roof back over it once it's finished. My images aren't quite as professional looking as I've just quickly snapped them on Android but I hope it makes sense.
@simsplayer818 Hahaha... so funny, as while you were posting I was also testing this in my game. I found the same issue and addressed it much like you did - where there is no roof over the platform, just a hole. (I did the same fix by adding a room above the opening over the platform on the room above, then deleting it's ceiling and walls and leaving the floor, then I was able to paint the ceiling also... because it was no longer missing/an open hole.) @gertie47 I'm sorry, as this is quite annoying. I'm wondering if it's a bug that should be reported. If I find a bug report on it I'll post here so everyone could add their 'Me Too' and 'XP' to the bug report. 🙌
Edit: I did not find a bug report on this one, but I think it would be a good one to make a bug report on. Please note that I personally always avoid butting a platform up against any wall, because if the platform does not have at least one tile in-between it and a wall, I get issues. My guess is that it's not 'technically' considered a room, though you can upload a platform as a room in the gallery/library. So... you cannot add walls to the platform like a room, etc.
@SheriGR I wondered about that as well. I only get a properly filled in ceiling if my platforms are on a ground floor or a lower floor with rooms above it. If it's under a roof for example, I get gaps everywhere. It also bothers me they are considered a separate room because I use them to make shelving and window seats. If I add that room to the gallery, it often has bits missing lol. It has chunks taken away because I've had platforms around the sides of it 😕. I like them because I can add floor decor and floor cushions to them.
